Job summary

SLAC's Experiment Control Systems division seeks a Software Developer to build Python and C/C++ applications and automation scripts that control complex experiments.

You will collaborate with scientists and engineers, maintain production-grade code, and contribute to EPICS-based control systems and data acquisition across multiple projects in a world-leading research environment.

The role emphasizes code quality, testing, and mentoring junior engineers on best practices.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Physical Sciences, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related field, plus 8 years of experience or equivalent combination.
• Strong proficiency in Python and PyQt, including designing and maintaining large-scale production-grade codebases.
• Experience with C/C++ code development and maintenance.
• Experience with Git and collaborative development workflows.
• End-to-end ownership of tasks, project management, scheduling, and stakeholder management.

Responsibilities

• Develop, maintain, and own Python and C/C++ applications and libraries essential for experiment operations, instrument control, and data acquisition.
• Collaborate with scientists and engineers to translate requirements into reliable software solutions and set design standards.
• Troubleshoot and resolve complex issues from UI to EPICS-based control system infrastructure.
• Architect and mentor in collaboration with teammates and international groups on public/private software packages (GitHub).
• Develop and refine engineering processes, define roadmaps, and influence priorities for long-term system reliability.
