Job summary

Collins Aerospace in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico is hiring a Senior Software Engineer to develop state-of-the-art embedded Linux systems. You will own the Linux OS ecosystem, including kernel, rootfs, bootloader and BSP, and work closely with FPGA, hardware and systems teams to deliver secure, high‑reliability software for radios and related products.

The role requires a STEM degree with 3–5+ years of embedded Linux experience, strong C/C++, scripting skills, and the ability to obtain a DoD security

Qualifications

• Degree in STEM and minimum 5 years experience or advanced degree with at least 3 years.
• Proficiency in English (verbal and written).
• U.S. citizenship required; DoD security clearance eligibility.
• Must be able to obtain DoD clearance and pass government investigations.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop and enhance embedded Linux OS ecosystem including toolchain, kernel, rootfs, bootloader and BSP.
• Contribute to design, coding, testing and support for embedded Linux software systems.
• Assist in root cause analysis of hardware‑software issues.
• Prepare software builds for simulation and target hardware; follow Collins processes.
• Contribute to engineering estimates for features.

As a Senior Software Engineer in this organization, you will be involved in the development of state-of-the-art communications, information assurance, and general-purpose processing systems.The Advanced Technology and Capabilities directorate supports some of the most cutting-edge products across the enterprise. We develop innovative solutions that keep our military members safe, connected, and informed. Our team has some of the most knowledgeable experts in the industry and work with all the most recent technologies in embedded software development.Within Collins Aerospace we work alongside FPGA, hardware, and systems teams in order to seamlessly embed our advanced technology into our Mission Systems product portfolio. Examples of these products range from high-frequency radios to secure, sophisticated software-defined radios that can enable pilots and soldiers to transfer data, voice and imagery over the air.

This position will sit at our Aguadilla, PR location. You must be residing in Puerto Rico at the time of starting employment. Relocation is not offered.

This role is categorized as hybrid, with 3 days onsite and 2 days remote following the schedule assigned by the Manager.

What YOU will do:

• Design, develop and continuously enhance our customized Linux OS ecosystem and maintain ownership over areas such as build toolchain, kernel, root file system, bootloader, device drivers, and BSP for a wide variety of hardware boards.
• Contribute to the design, coding, testing, delivery and ongoing support for embedded Linux software systems.
• Participate in root cause analysis and resolution of complex hardware-software issues.
• Prepare software builds for execution in a simulation environment, reference platforms and on the target hardware. Understand and utilize the appropriate Collins Aerospace processes and tools during product development, resulting in increased product quality and improving customer satisfaction.
• Contribute to engineering estimates for product features.

Qualifications you must have:

• Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and minimum 5 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 3 years of experience
• Demonstrated professional experience communicating in English (verbal and written).
• U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are authorized to access information under this program/contract.
• Must have or be capable of obtaining a US Department of Defense (DoD) security clearance. Candidate selected will be subject to a government security investigation/reinstatement and must meet eligibility requirements

Qualifications We Prefer:

• Proficiency with embedded C/C++
• Experience with scripting languages (Bash and Python)
• Experience with embedded Linux device drivers
• Experience with board bring-up and target hardware integration
• Experience with debugging and root cause investigations using hardware schematics and tools such as logic analyzer and Wireshark
• Experience with GIT and SVN version control systems
• Experience packaging custom Linux distribution with Buildroot.
• Experience in developing and maintaining Linux board support packages (BSP) for embedded systems
• Development experience Agile methodologies and DevSecOps
