Job summary

Cloudflare is hiring for an R2 Gateway engineering role, joining a team that builds the S3-compatible API gateway and related services at the edge. You will work across Cloudflare Workers, Kubernetes, and storage/metatada layers to deliver fast, reliable, and scalable access for R2 users.

You will design and operate the API surface, implement high-throughput services, and drive reliability through observability and incident response. AI-assisted development is encouraged.

Qualifications

• Strong programming in Rust, TypeScript, Go
• Experience with large-scale distributed systems
• Familiarity with object storage, HTTP/APIs, edge computing
• Experience designing high-throughput APIs and API evolution
• Understanding of monitoring, alerting and incident response
• Strong written and verbal communication
• Comfort with AI coding tools
• Experience with S3 API surface or edge platforms

Responsibilities

• Design, implement, and operate the S3-compatible API gateway for R2.
• Build and operate services on Cloudflare Workers and Kubernetes with high throughput.
• Own the request path end-to-end: auth, routing, rate limiting, error handling.
• Lead projects from design to production monitoring.
• Improve reliability, performance, and observability of the gateway.
• Participate in on-call rotations and postmortems to raise reliability.
• Leverage AI tools to accelerate development and debugging.
• Collaborate with storage, metadata, networking, and other platform teams
