Job summary

SteerBridge seeks a Senior Software Engineer, Data to own the software engineering practice around the Modern Disability Claims data pipeline. This backend-focused role builds internal tools, APIs, and libraries, and sets design, testing, and refactoring standards for the data platform.

You will mentor engineers, lead code reviews, partner with Data Engineers, and champion automated testing with pytest while delivering robust data services and clear documentation for multiple teams.

Qualifications

• U.S. Citizenship is required.
• Public Trust clearance or ability to obtain; active Secret/Top Secret satisfies.
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience).
• 6+ years of experience in software engineering.
• Deep proficiency in Python with typing, modern packaging, and design-pattern practices.
• Extensive experience writing automated tests with pytest.
• Experience designing and building APIs and backend services.
• Experience with Git and standard software development practices, including code review.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills, with mentoring experience.

Responsibilities

• Contribute to sprint/team planning and provide status updates.

Position Overview

SteerBridge is seeking a Senior Software Engineer, Data to support the Modern Disability Claims program. This senior role owns the software engineering practice that surrounds our data platform, including internal tools, APIs and services that expose or consume data from the pipeline, and shared libraries/frameworks, while setting the standards and rigor (design patterns, automated testing, refactoring) that raise the overall engineering quality of the data pipeline. This is a backend-focused role distinct from both the Data Engineer, who owns the pipeline logic itself, and the Software Engineer, who builds full-stack, user-facing features.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain internal tools, APIs, and shared libraries/frameworks that expose and consume data from the Modern Disability Claims data pipeline
• Set and enforce software engineering standards, including design patterns, clean architecture, and refactoring practices, across the data platform's surrounding tooling
• Establish and champion automated testing discipline (unit and integration, using pytest) across the data engineering team
• Partner closely with Data Engineers to identify pipeline components that would benefit from stronger software engineering practices, and lead the effort to bring them up to standard
• Package and distribute Python libraries and services with clear versioning, dependency management, and documentation
• Lead code reviews for platform tooling and, where relevant, pipeline code, setting the bar for shared engineering standards
• Mentor engineers on software design, testing, and refactoring practices
• Debug and resolve complex software defects in internal tools and services supporting the data pipeline
• Document APIs, libraries, and internal tools for use by other engineering teams
• Contribute to sprint/team planning and provide status updates on assigned work

Required Qualifications

• U.S. Citizenship required
• Must hold, or be able to obtain, a Public Trust clearance (an active Secret or Top Secret clearance also satisfies this requirement)
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience)
• 6+ years of experience in software engineering
• Deep proficiency in Python, including type hints/static typing (e.g., mypy), modern packaging (e.g., Poetry, setuptools), and clean‑architecture/design‑pattern practices
• Extensive experience writing automated tests with pytest (unit and integration testing), with a track record of establishing testing discipline across a team
• Experience designing and building APIs and backend services
• Experience with Git and standard software development practices, including code review
• Strong communication and collaboration skills, with a track record of mentoring other engineers and working closely with data engineers to raise shared code‑quality standards

Preferred Qualifications

• Familiarity with, or hands‑on experience with, data pipelines or ETL/ELT concepts (helpful, not required)
• Experience with cloud data platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP)
• Experience with CI/CD pipelines and automated quality gates
• Experience supporting healthcare, insurance, benefits administration, or federal programs
