Job summary

Zocdoc is hiring a Senior Software Engineer to build the data platform that connects products with analytics, ML, and operations. You will work at the boundary of backend engineering and data infrastructure, delivering APIs, libraries, schemas, services, and supported workflows for safe data usage.

You will design data contracts, enable reliable event and batch delivery, and empower teams to ship without heavy Data Engineering dependency.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, including backend, platform, developer infrastructure, or data-intensive systems.
• Strong programming skills in Python and SQL, plus experience with a statically typed language (C#, Java, Kotlin, or TypeScript).
• Track record of building APIs, SDKs, data contracts, or event publishing frameworks.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and operate services and developer tooling for publishing and consuming trusted data.
• Improve event-driven data paths with Kafka, Avro, and schema registries; ensure clear delivery semantics and schema evolution.
• Create reliable data activation paths from warehouse/lakehouse to products and systems with monitoring and lineage.
• Design and operate reverse ETL and data activation while ensuring ownership and governance.
• Incorporate privacy, access control, auditability, and compliance into platform workflows.
• Write infrastructure as code, operate on AWS, and enhance monitoring, SLIs, and runbooks.

Your Impact on our Mission:

Zocdoc is hiring a Senior Software Engineer to build the data platform that connects our products with analytics, machine learning, and operational systems. This role sits on the Data Engineering team at the boundary of backend engineering and data infrastructure. You will build APIs, libraries, schemas, services, and supported workflows that help engineers publish and use data safely.

Your work will cover the path from source-defined contracts and validation through reliable event and batch delivery to data activation in products and business systems. You will help make quality, ownership, observability, and privacy part of the platform, while giving teams a clearer path to ship without depending on Data Engineering for every integration.

Your day to day is…

• Design, build, and operate services and developer tooling that help engineering teams publish and consume trusted data, including contract workflows, APIs, SDKs, generated types, and validation tools.
• Improve event-driven data paths built on Kafka, Avro, and schema registries, with clear delivery semantics, compatibility rules, and safe schema evolution.
• Create reliable ways to move curated data from the warehouse or lakehouse into products and operational systems, with monitoring, lineage, and clear ownership.
• Design and operate reverse ETL and data activation paths that move curated warehouse or lakehouse data into products and operational systems, with monitoring, lineage, and clear ownership.
• Build compliance capabilities into the platform, including data classification, deletion and masking workflows, access controls, audit trails, and policy enforcement.
• Write infrastructure as code, operate platform services in AWS, and improve service-level indicators, alerts, dashboards, runbooks, and on-call response.
• Partner with internal users, document supported workflows, review designs and code, and help teammates build systems that other teams can adopt.

You’ll be successful in this role if you have…

• 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, including meaningful work on backend, platform, developer infrastructure, or data-intensive systems.
• Strong programming skills in Python, practical experience with SQL, and experience with at least one statically typed language such as C#, Java, Kotlin, or TypeScript.
• A record of building APIs, SDKs, shared libraries, data contract systems, or event publishing frameworks used outside your team, with a solid understanding of schema design, versioning, validation, code generation, and migrations.
• Experience with distributed or event-driven systems, including delivery guarantees, idempotency, retries, ordering, dead-letter handling, and operational failure modes, plus hands-on work with Kafka or a comparable platform and a schema technology such as Avro, Protobuf, JSON Schema, or OpenAPI.
• Experience operating cloud services with automated testing, continuous delivery, observability, infrastructure as code, and incident response, plus familiarity with warehouse or lakehouse platforms such as Snowflake, Databricks, or Iceberg.
• Bonus points if you have built software in a regulated environment and understand practical controls for PHI or PII, including access, deletion, de-identification, lineage, and auditing.

Base salary offered is determined by a number of factors including the candidate’s experience, qualifications, and skills. Certain positions are also eligible for variable pay and/or equity; your recruiter will discuss the full compensation package details.

NYC Base Salary Range

$174,000 — $220,000 USD
