Job summary

Insight Global seeks an experienced Senior Backend Engineer to design and implement scalable Java services in a production environment. You will build and operate backend systems on AWS, leveraging EC2/ECS, RDS, DynamoDB, Lambda, S3, SQS, and API Gateway.

You will instrument systems using Datadog and Splunk, own production troubleshooting, and participate in code reviews to maintain high quality and test coverage. Collaboration with product managers and engineers is essential.

Qualifications

• 5–8 years of professional software engineering with Java focus.
• Strong microservices design and implementation experience.
• Solid debugging and problem-solving across production boundaries.
• Hands-on experience with Datadog and/or Splunk observability tooling.
• Experience deploying and operating backend services on AWS (EC2/ECS, RDS, Lambda, S3, SQS, DynamoDB, API Gateway).
• Experience building RESTful and GraphQL APIs and event-driven architectures.
• Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and modern deployment practices.
• Strong communication and design skills; able to write clear design docs and discuss trade-offs.

• Write high-quality, well-tested Java code for scalable backend services - this is a coding-heavy role.
• Build and operate services on AWS, using services such such as EC2/ECS, RDS, DynamoDB, Lambda, S3, SQS and kafka.
• Instrument services for observability using Datadog, Splunk and Mixpanel - dashboards, alerts, traces, and logs that give your team real insight into system behavior.
• Own production troubleshooting: diagnose and resolve incidents, identify root causes, and drive lasting fixes to prevent recurrence.
• Participate actively in code reviews, holding a high bar for code quality, readability, and test coverage.
• Collaborate with product managers and fellow engineers to turn business requirements into well-scoped technical designs

Skills and Requirements

• 5–8 years of professional software engineering experience, with deep hands-on Java development throughout.
• Strong microservices design and implementation experience - you can architect a service from scratch and reason clearly about its boundaries, dependencies, and failure modes.
• Solid debugging and problem-solving skills; comfortable investigating complex issues across service boundaries in production environments and scalability.
• Hands-on experience with monitoring and observability tooling, specifically Datadog and/or Splunk — building dashboards, writing alert rules, and using traces and logs to diagnose issues.
• Experience deploying and operating backend services on AWS (e.g., EC2/ECS, RDS, Lambda, S3, SQS, DynamoDB, API Gateway).
• Experience building RESTful and GraphQL API and working with event-driven or messaging-based architectures.
• Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and modern deployment practices.
• Strong communication and design skills - you can write a clear design doc, articulate trade-offs to peers, and engage constructively in technical discussions.
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
