Job summary

Gusto is hiring a Senior Software Engineer for the People Technology team to architect and build PeopleOS, an AI-native internal HR platform. You will own the AI-powered HR toolkit, integrate critical systems, and ship tools used by Gusties every day.

You will collaborate with People Ops, design scalable integrations (Workday, Greenhouse, Slack, Google Workspace), and lead technical discussions while ensuring HR data security and compliance. Hybrid in-office schedule in SF/NYC/Denver applies.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of full-stack software engineering experience with production-quality work.
• Strong experience building and consuming REST APIs, including OAuth, rate limiting, pagination, and error handling.
• Demonstrated ability to integrate SaaS platforms (bonus: Workday, Greenhouse, Slack, or Google Workspace).
• Comfort with AI/LLM API integration (Anthropic Claude, OpenAI, or equivalent) including prompt design and parsing.
• Experience shipping internal tools or developer tooling with end users and feedback loops.
• Strong written communication: document APIs, write tech specs, and explain trade-offs to non-engineers.
• Understanding HR data sensitivity and data retention guidelines.

Responsibilities

• Be the technical owner for PeopleOS, our internal AI-powered HR platform and related tools.
• Partner with People Ops stakeholders to translate workflows into software, including design, implementation, UAT, and release.
• Design, build, test, and maintain integrations across Workday, Greenhouse, Slack, and Google Workspace.
• Build MCP servers to give AI agents structured access to People Systems data.
• Integrate Anthropic Claude and other AI APIs to create smart internal tooling for HR use cases.
• Document integration specs and data mappings in Notion; participate in Jira sprint planning and demos.
• Troubleshoot issues, identify root causes, and implement corrective actions across the portfolio.
