Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or equivalent.
  • 7+ years of software development experience for Bachelor’s, or 5+ years for Master’s.
  • 3+ years of embedded systems experience and verification practices.

Responsibilities

  • Lead development of software applications and subsystems across full product lifecycle.
  • Provide technical leadership in embedded and application software design; influence architecture and standards.
  • Design, develop, and maintain embedded software for complex medical devices.
  • Lead secure system architecture ensuring safety and effectiveness per IEC 81001-5-1 and IEC 62304.
  • Develop software verification strategies with test plans, protocols, and reports.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams for design transfer, manufacturing release, and post-release support.
  • Perform peer code reviews to ensure quality, safety, and maintainability.
  • Translate User Requirements into Software Requirements Specifications with stakeholders.
  • Support released products through maintenance and revalidation activities.
  • Advise on tools, processes, and technologies used in development.
  • Mentor other software engineers.

Job description

CONMED is seeking a Senior Software Engineerto join the Advanced Surgical R&D team based in Denver, CO. This role will partner closely with cross functional teams to lead the development of secure software system for highly complex medical devices used in laparoscopic, robotic, and open surgical procedures.

The Senior Software Engineer will play a key technical leadership role, contributing hands‑on across the full secure product development lifecycle while influencing architecture, development standards, and design decisions in a fast‑paced, innovation‑driven environment.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Lead the development of software applications and subsystems across the full product development lifecycle, including architecture, implementation, verification, deployment, and post‑market support.
  • Provide technical leadership in embedded and application software design, contributing to system architecture for safety- and quality‑critical medical devices and establishing best practices across the software development team.
  • Design, develop, and maintain embedded software systems for complex medical devices.
  • Lead in designing and developing a secure system architecture to ensure product security, safety, and effectiveness per IEC 81001‑5‑1 and IEC 62304.
  • Lead development of software verification strategies, including test plans, protocols, and reports in compliance with applicable regulatory standard.
  • Collaborate cross functionally to support design transfer, manufacturing release, and post‑release product support.
  • Conduct and lead peer code reviews, ensuring adherence to quality, safety, and maintainability standards.
  • Work closely with commercial, clinical, and marketing stakeholders to translate User Requirements into clear, testable Software Requirements Specifications.
  • Support released products through software maintenance, modification, and revalidation activities.
  • Provide input on selection, adoption, and implementation of software development tools, processes, and technologies.
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to other software engineers as appropriate.
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or equivalent engineering discipline.
  • Bachelor’s degree with 7+ years of software development experience OR Master’s degree with 5+ years of software development experience
  • 3+ years experience with embedded systems and test/verification practices
Other Attributes:
  • Experience designing software for regulated or safety‑critical systems
  • Experience with C/C++ and/or other relevant languages
  • Demonstrated experience leading or owning significant software subsystems or architectures in regulated environments.
  • A solid foundation of software design principles and practices, including secure software architecture design.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including technical documentation.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with software development under standards such as IEC 62304 or similar
  • Experience with embedded debugging, hardware/software integration, or system‑level troubleshooting
  • Familiarity with modern development tools, testing frameworks, and scripting or automation
  • Experience with distributed or connected systems (cloud, web, or data persistence)

0-20% Travel

Disclosure as required by applicable law, the annual salary range for this position is $104,134- $163,640. The actual compensation may vary based on geographic location, work experience, education, and skill level. The salary range is CONMED’s good faith belief at the time of this posting.
