Ready to Engineer the Future of Veterinary Medicine?

Zomedica is pioneering new ways to connect technology with animal health through innovative diagnostic and therapeutic solutions. In this important software engineering role, you will help build and oversee the company’s embedded software system landscape and development lifecycle.

Key to this role is collaborating with product marketing and engineering teams to create a product vision for embedded software systems across multiple product lines. To be successful, you will have a mindset and skillset that can bridge big picture information system architecture and hands-on application coding to deliver and implement the desired product roadmap features.

This role is more than engineering software. It's about solving complex challenges to create technologies that improve veterinary care and patient outcomes.

What's in It for You?
  • Advanced Engineering Challenges – Design sophisticated software systems that power next-generation veterinary diagnostics.
  • Hands-On Innovation – Work from concept through commercialization, turning ideas into real-world products.
  • Ownership & Growth – Lead impactful projects and expand your expertise across multiple product lines.
  • Collaborative Environment – Partner with experts across engineering, science, manufacturing, and product teams.
  • Industry Impact – Help veterinarians deliver faster, more accurate care through innovative diagnostic technologies.
Are You Ready?

If you’re ready to combine your engineering expertise with leadership and project management skills and play a critical role in shaping Zomedica’s future, we’d love to hear from you.

In this role, you will serve as a technical contributor and cross-functional partner, communicating technical tradeoffs clearly, mentoring engineers when appropriate, and helping teams make practical decisions that balance customer value, product performance, regulatory expectations, and business priorities.

Key responsibilities include:
  • Design, develop, and maintain software solutions spanning embedded devices, edge platforms, and cloud services.
  • Develop telemetry, monitoring, and remote diagnostic capabilities to improve fleet and device reliability.
  • Design and maintain over-the-air software and firmware update mechanisms.
  • Collaborate with cloud, web, data, and AI teams to deliver connected product capabilities.
  • Lead embedded software architecture and technical design for Linux, Windows IoT, and microcontroller-based platforms, including operating system strategy, application frameworks, device interfaces, communication protocols, diagnostics, performance, reliability, and long-term maintainability.
  • Design, implement, debug, test, and maintain production-quality embedded software, including application code, system services, device connectivity, user-interface components, integration layers, and tooling required to support embedded product functionality.
  • Evaluate and recommend technologies related to edge computing, cloud services, IoT connectivity, and AI-enabled diagnostics.
  • Support secure and compliant product development by contributing to software risk analysis, cybersecurity maintenance, vulnerability remediation, traceability, design reviews, verification evidence, and lifecycle documentation consistent with applicable quality system expectations.
Ideally, to be successful you will possess:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or other related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 5-7+ years of experience with diverse coding background in C, C++, C#, and Node, including demonstrated experience:
  • developing on embedded Linux and Windows IoT platforms;
  • developing multimedia and computer-vision applications, including GStreamer pipeline development, camera integration, video capture and streaming, hardware-accelerated video processing, and integration with AI/ML inference frameworks;
  • developing embedded user interfaces with QT, Maui, Avalonia, and headless web applications:
  • working with 16-bit and/or 32-bit microcontrollers;
  • with protocols such as MQTT, HTTP, TCP/IP, UART, I2C, etc.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and proven ability to interact effectively with cross-functional groups and subject matter experts.
  • Minimal travel (up to 10%).

Zomedica offers excellent compensation and incentives, a competitive benefits package with medical insurance, employer-paid dental / vision / disability / life insurance, a 401k plan with a Company match, generous PTO and paid holidays, a collaborative work environment, and great growth potential.
