Job summary

Harvard University IT seeks a Senior Software Engineer to design, develop, test, and support complex Oracle APEX applications and related database objects for the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. You will lead technical design discussions, translate requirements into secure, scalable solutions, and contribute to integration work with RESTful APIs.

You will participate in Agile processes, perform code reviews, and help drive modernization, security remediation, and AI-assisted development tools

Qualifications

  • Minimum of five years’ post‑secondary education or relevant work experience.
  • Extensive experience with Oracle, APEX, SQL, PL/SQL, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
  • Experience with Oracle REST Data Services, APEX Office Print, and RESTful services.
  • Experience with Git and deployment tools.
  • Agile development experience, preferably Scrum.
  • Strong knowledge of secure coding and application security practices.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for technical/non-technical audiences.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem‑solving skills.

Responsibilities

  • Translate business requirements into secure, scalable technical solutions with stakeholders.
  • Develop and maintain integrations using RESTful APIs and Oracle REST Data Services.

  • Participate fully in Agile processes including sprint planning and reviews.
  • Troubleshoot production issues and implement sustainable long‑term fixes.
  • Contribute to platform upgrades, security remediation, and modernization initiatives.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and AI-assisted development tools for productivity.
  • Provide knowledge sharing through documentation and mentoring.

Job Description

The Senior Software Engineer serves as an experienced technical contributor responsible for designing, developing, testing, implementing, and supporting complex software solutions for the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS). This role works across the full application lifecycle, contributing to technical design decisions, application modernization, and delivery of strategic technology initiatives.

Job-Specific Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, test, implement, and support complex Oracle APEX applications, PL/SQL packages, procedures, functions, views, and related database objects.
  • Lead technical design discussions and contribute to architectural decisions that improve scalability, security, and long-term maintainability.
  • Analyze business requirements and translate them into secure, scalable, user-focused technical solutions, meeting directly with stakeholders throughout the application lifecycle.
  • Develop and maintain integrations with institutional and third‑party systems using RESTful APIs, Oracle REST Data Services, and related technologies.
  • Perform code reviews and promote development standards, secure coding practices, and documentation across the development team.
  • Participate fully in Agile development processes, including backlog refinement, estimation, sprint planning, testing, deployment, and retrospectives.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve production issues, data issues, integration failures, and application defects through root cause analysis, implementing sustainable long‑term solutions.
  • Contribute to platform upgrades, security remediation, technical debt reduction, and application modernization initiatives.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies, automation opportunities, and AI‑assisted development tools that improve productivity, quality, and operational efficiency; support third‑party integrations such as APEX Office Print and SerpApi.
  • Support knowledge sharing through technical documentation, cross‑training, and mentoring, serving as a technical leader during solution design, code reviews, and troubleshooting.
Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

Basic Qualifications are the minimum threshold a candidate must meet in order to be considered for this role.

  • Minimum of five years’ post‑secondary education or relevant work experience

Additional Qualifications and Skills:

  • Minimum of 5+ years of professional software development experience, including a strong background in Oracle, APEX, SQL, PL/SQL, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
  • 5+ years of experience as an Oracle APEX developer or software engineer in a client‑focused organization, including web application development and relational database technology.
  • Experience with Oracle REST Data Services, APEX Office Print (AOP), and developing REST‑based web services.
  • Experience with Git and source control management, including SQLcl Projects or similar structured deployment tools.
  • Experience with Agile software development methodologies, preferably Scrum.
  • Strong knowledge of application security best practices and secure coding techniques.
  • Experience evaluating and adopting emerging technologies, including AI‑assisted development tools.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical information to both technical and non‑technical audiences.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem‑solving skills; proven ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a dynamic team environment.
  • Strong understanding of relational database design, data modeling, data integrity, and database implementation practices.
  • Familiarity with WCAG 2.1 AA standards for web accessibility.

Certificates and Licenses:

  • Completion of Harvard IT Academy specified foundational courses (or external equivalent) preferred.
Additional Information
  • Appointment End Date: This is a fully benefitted, full‑time Harvard University position that has been funded for two years from date of hire. There is a possibility of renewal, contingent upon your work performance meeting the needs of the department and the continued availability of funding designed to support the position.

Work Format Details

This position has been determined by school or unit leaders that some of the duties and responsibilities can be effectively performed at a non‑Harvard location. The work schedule and location will be set by the department at its discretion and based upon operational needs. When not working at a Harvard or Harvard‑designated location, employees in hybrid positions must work in a Harvard registered state in compliance with the University’s Policy on Employment Outside of Massachusetts .
