Job summary

Kingland Systems LLC in Ames, IA is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to own backend services in Java/Spring. You will work on PostgreSQL/OpenSearch backed data processing, contribute to design decisions, and occasionally frontend work using Angular/TypeScript.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or Computer Engineering.
• 5+ years of professional software development experience.
• Backend development in Java with Spring/Spring Boot is required, or equivalent in Go or C# with willingness to switch to Java/Spring.
• Extensive automated testing including edges/CI reliability.
• Knowledge of secure coding practices and data handling.
• Ability to reason about data changes, failure paths, and concurrent requests and design tests.

POSITION SUMMARY | Senior Software Engineer

Banks, auditors, and other financial institutions rely on Kingland's platform to manage the entity data behind their risk and compliance decisions. You’ll work primarily in Java and Spring on backend services that use PostgreSQL, OpenSearch, caching, and AWS messaging to process complex data.

As a software engineer at Kingland, you'll take ownership of scoped features and reliability and performance improvements, from requirements through production deployment. Working with an experienced team, you'll improve the correctness and efficiency of data processing, strengthen automated tests, preserve API compatibility, and improve the tools used to diagnose and recover from problems. You'll also contribute to design decisions that influence technical direction. The role includes occasional frontend contributions; experience with Angular or TypeScript is helpful.

RESPONSIBILITIES | Senior Software Engineer

• Build and maintain secure, testable Java/Spring services within the existing architecture, and raise opportunities to improve shared patterns
• Preserve correct behavior across APIs and asynchronous processing, including edge cases, concurrent updates, and transaction boundaries
• Write automated unit and integration tests whose assertions verify the intended behavior
• Improve structured logging, metrics, alarms, and runbooks to detect problems earlier and make diagnosis and recovery more effective
• Investigate performance issues with the team and measure the effect of changes to queries, caching, or batching using representative data
• Collaborate with teammates, product owners, and client-facing teams in two-week sprints, from requirements review through implementation, testing, and deployment

POSITION REQUIREMENTS | Senior Software Engineer

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or Computer Engineering
• A minimum of 5 years of professional software development experience
• Backend development experience in Java with Spring or Spring Boot, or strong experience in another backend language such as Go or C# and willingness to work primarily in Java and Spring.
• Regular use of automated testing, including edge cases and failure behavior, with attention to reliable execution in CI.
• Knowledge of secure coding practices and responsible handling of sensitive data
• Ability to reason about data changes, failure paths, and concurrent requests, and design tests that verify the intended behavior
• Clear written and verbal communication, including explaining technical tradeoffs and incorporating review feedback.

PREFERRED SKILLS | Senior Software Engineer

• PostgreSQL queries and indexes, hierarchical or bulk datasets, Redis caching, or search indexing with OpenSearch/Elasticsearch.
• Asynchronous processing: message queues, retry/backoff, duplicate-safe processing, ordering, dead-letter handling, or transaction-aware dispatch.
• AWS services, Terraform, GitLab CI/CD, Gradle, MyBatis, or Flyway.
• Performance/load testing and operational diagnostics using logs, correlation IDs, metrics, alarms, and runbooks.
• Angular/TypeScript or another modern frontend framework; safe incremental framework and library upgrades.
• Banking, financial services, audit, or another regulated domain.
