We are hiring a Senior Site Reliability / Gitops Engineer to our Information Systems (IS) team. This role is ideal for an automation-focused senior technologist passionate about Linux, looking to build a career with Canonical and contribute to the success of Ubuntu and open source products. Job Summary

The IS team supports and maintains all of Canonical's IT production services, serving over 60 million Ubuntu users.

As a Senior SRE & Gitops engineer, you'll drive operations automation in our private and public clouds using open source infrastructure as code software, CI/CD pipelines, and Canonical's automation products. You will also provide feedback to developers to improve product scalability, contribute bug reports or pull requests, and collaborate with other teams. You'll be part of a global team supporting Canonical's services and the Ubuntu community.

Responsibilities

• Lead automation and Gitops development as an embedded tech lead.
• Collaborate with IS architect to align solutions with architecture vision.
• Design services to be offered as products.
• Develop infrastructure as code practices, increasing automation and improving processes.
• Automate software operations for reusability and consistency across clouds.
• Maintain operational responsibility for core services, networks, and infrastructure.
• Enhance troubleshooting, capacity planning, and performance analysis skills; set up observability tools like Prometheus, Grafana, Elasticsearch; design monitoring and alerting systems.
• Support and collaborate with global engineering, operations, and support teams.
• Focus on larger projects and automation during dedicated development time.
• Share expertise through design sessions, mentorship, and collaborative work.
• Handle time-critical escalations.

Requirements

• Modern hosting architecture driven by infrastructure as code across private and public clouds.
• Product mindset focused on developing products, not just solutions.
• Experience with Python, especially large projects.
• Experience with Kubernetes or similar container orchestration systems.
• Proven ability to manage and deploy cloud infrastructure via code.
• Practical knowledge of Linux networking, routing, firewalls.
• Familiarity with Linux storage solutions like Ceph and databases.
• Hands-on experience administering enterprise Linux servers.
• Extensive cloud computing knowledge.
• Bachelor’s degree or higher, preferably in computer science or related field.
• Effective communication skills in English (email, chat, video, in-person).
• Motivated troubleshooting skills from kernel to web layers.
• Willingness to learn quickly and adapt to fast-changing environments.
• Comfort working within distributed teams.
• Passion for open source, especially Ubuntu or Debian.
