Job summary

Google is seeking a Site Reliability Engineer to own the reliability and scalability of critical services in a globally distributed environment. The role emphasizes treating operations as a software problem, with full authority to fix, extend, and scale code to maintain high availability and performance.

Ideal candidates combine systems and software backgrounds, with experience across design, development, deployment, and ongoing reliability improvements.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience.
• 5 years of software development experience in one or more programming languages.
• 3 years designing, analyzing, and troubleshooting large-scale distributed systems.
• 2 years leading projects or providing technical leadership.

Responsibilities

• Engage in and improve the whole lifecycle of services – from inception and design through to deployment, operation, and refinement.
• Support services before they go live through activities such as system design consulting, developing software platforms and frameworks, capacity planning, and launch reviews.
• Maintain services once they are live by measuring and monitoring availability, latency, and overall system health.
• Scale systems sustainably through mechanisms like automation, and evolve systems by pushing for changes that improve reliability and velocity.
• Practice sustainable incident response and blameless postmortems.
