Job summary

Mastercard is seeking a Senior Site Reliability Engineer, Performance Engineering, in Missouri to optimize ABU services and lead automated testing efforts. You will partner with SRE and performance teams to tune, scale, and secure high‑throughput, low‑latency financial applications, and guide incident response improvements.

The role emphasizes automation, AI‑assisted script generation, and data‑driven performance analysis across stakeholders across geographies, with a strong focus on reliability

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in CS or related discipline or equivalent hands‑on experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of web applications and distributed systems infrastructure.
  • Strong verbal and written communication for technical and non‑technical audiences.
  • Experience in performance bottleneck analysis and designing systems for scale.
  • Experience with JVM internals and garbage collection tuning.
  • Experience with database, OS, storage internals or performance scaling.
  • Experience building automated performance regression test suites for low‑latency, high‑throughput financial apps.
  • Experience identifying bottlenecks across app, DB, cache, data stores, networks, queues, and streaming.
  • Experience end‑to‑end issue evaluation from edge components to DBs.
  • Experience working with internal stakeholders providing performance leadership.
  • Knowledge of AI‑assisted development and analysis methods.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with site reliability and performance engineers to test and tune ABU services via automated test suites and capacity planning.
  • Build, manage, and maintain robust performance testing suites.
  • Measure availability, latency, throughput, and overall system health; communicate results clearly.
  • Scale systems through automation and propose reliability improvements.
  • Review production incidents; drive changes to reduce recurrence.
  • Manage project priorities, deadlines, and deliverables independently.
  • Apply automation‑first mindset to repetitive tasks.
  • Use AI‑assisted tools to accelerate script generation, test data prep, log analysis, and anomaly detection.
  • Apply data‑driven analysis and observability to identify trends and bottlenecks; recommend improvements.
  • Coach and mentor technical talent with deep technical expertise.

Requirements
Must have:
  • We prefer a bachelors degree in Computer Science, Computer Systems, Information Technology, or a closely related discipline, or equivalent hands‑on experience.
  • We need advanced knowledge of web applications and distributed systems infrastructure.
  • We need strong verbal and written communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences.
  • We need experience in performance bottleneck analysis and designing systems for scale.
  • We need experience with Java Virtual Machine internals and garbage collection tuning.
  • We need experience with one or more of the following: database internals, server or operating system internals, storage system internals, or performance scaling for similar platforms.
  • We need experience building automated performance regression test suites for low‑latency, high‑throughput financial applications.
  • We need experience identifying bottlenecks across application code, databases, cache layers, data stores, servers, networks, messaging queues, and streaming platforms.
  • We need experience evaluating issues end to end, from edge components through application tiers and databases.
  • We need experience working directly with internal stakeholders, resolving issues, and providing performance engineering leadership.
  • We need working knowledge of AI‑assisted development and analysis methods, including prompt‑based script generation, automation workflow creation, test result summarization, and root‑cause analysis support.
  • Preferred experience includes Java, Python, Scala, or other programming and scripting languages.
  • Preferred experience includes Bitbucket, Maven, Jenkins, Gatling, and BlazeMeter.
  • Preferred experience includes migrating legacy on‑premises testing suites to cloud‑native environments.
  • Preferred experience includes moving performance testing suites from LoadRunner to Gatling or BlazeMeter.
  • Preferred experience includes strong software performance analysis, bottleneck identification, scaling, and automation expertise.
  • Preferred experience includes using AI‑enabled tools or large language models to generate, refine, explain, or optimize performance testing scripts, automation utilities, and troubleshooting workflows.
  • Preferred experience includes applying AI‑assisted analysis to performance metrics, logs, traces, dashboards, and incident data.
  • Preferred experience includes familiarity with responsible AI practices, including validating AI‑generated outputs, protecting sensitive data, and aligning with enterprise security and compliance expectations.

  • We partner with site reliability engineers and performance engineers to test and tune ABU services before production release through automated test suites, system design consulting, bottleneck analysis, chaos testing, capacity planning, and launch reviews.
  • We build, manage, and maintain robust performance testing suites.
  • We measure and monitor availability, latency, throughput, performance, and overall system health, and we communicate results and recommendations clearly.
  • We scale systems sustainably through automation and recommend improvements that strengthen reliability, speed, and performance.
  • We review production incidents, identify contributing factors, and drive changes that reduce recurrence.
  • We manage project priorities, deadlines, and deliverables independently.
  • We apply an automation‑first mindset and automate repetitive tasks wherever practical.
  • We use AI‑assisted engineering tools to accelerate script generation, test data preparation, log analysis, anomaly detection, and repetitive automation while validating outputs through sound engineering review.
