Job summary

Amazon in Richmond, VA is seeking a Senior Site Workplace Health and Safety Manager to partner with the site operations team and execute WHS policies, ensuring compliance with local and regional regulations while leading continuous improvement initiatives.

You will mentor Safety Managers and Associates, apply lean methods to reduce risks, manage safety metrics and training programs, and deliver on-time, high-quality safety projects across the site.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • 7+ years in safety and/or environmental programs in manufacturing, production, or service operations.
  • 7+ years in people and performance management.
  • Experience applying lean principles and process improvement in an operational environment.
  • Willingness to work a variety of shifts, including nights and weekends.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as SME of local/regional regulations and company WHS policy.
  • Provide guidance and oversight to ensure compliance with all Amazon Safety Policies.
  • Measure site performance against published safety requirements; develop and implement action plans for deficiencies.
  • Maintain safety record‑keeping and data integrity; provide accurate reporting and metrics to support business safety initiatives.
  • Deliver on‑time and quality projects to Operations.
  • Analyze safety metrics and incident trends weekly and monthly; propose action plans to senior leadership.
  • Audit record‑keeping practices and Global Safety Database entries for global safety standard compliance.
  • Audit workplace organization and Associate behaviors to ensure accurate and consistent training, auditing and scoring methods.
  • Manage and mentor Safety Managers and Safety Associates on site.
  • Engage Injury Prevention Specialists (IPS) and Site Leadership to drive long‑term strategic actions for incident reduction.
  • Conduct targeted Kaizen events in partnership with Operations teams based on identified task risks (force, repetition, awkward postures).
  • Ensure site leadership and associates are trained and knowledgeable of their responsibilities under each policy.
  • Audit quality, delivery (including trainer qualifications), and effectiveness of all required safety training.
  • Review and revise deployed safety tools for continual improvement.
  • Partner with corporate and regional field safety personnel to incorporate global best practices into NA network standards.

By leveraging lean principles and Kaizen events, you will lead continuous improvement initiatives to reduce conditional and ergonomic risks and create a safe and healthful working environment for associates.

Responsibilities

Additional Job Elements
  • Lift up to 49 pounds and frequently push, pull, squat, bend, and reach
  • Stand or walk for up to 12 hours during shifts
  • Work in environments with varying noise levels and temperatures; outdoor loading departments subject to weather conditions
  • Continuously climb and descend stairs (applicable to sites with stairs)
  • Maintain effective care delivery in emergencies and assist emergency response at the site

Those who do not have an adult First Aid, CPR, AED certification from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross must obtain one within three weeks of the start date.

Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree
  • 7+ years of increasing responsibilities in safety and/or environmental programs in manufacturing, production, or service operations, or relevant experience applicable to the role
  • 7+ years of increasing responsibilities in people and performance management
  • Experience implementing lean principles and process improvement in an operational environment
  • Willingness to work a variety of shifts, including nights and weekends, as required to support direct reports and site needs
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree preferred
  • Certified Safety Professional preferred
  • Experience in a fast‑paced, dynamic organization
  • Interest in long‑term career development through assignments in multiple business units across the nation
  • Prior experience in a management development training program
  • Track record of effectively managing a safety operation comprising both salaried and hourly staff
  • Demonstrated experience in developing others into higher levels of responsibility in an organization
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including comfort interfacing with Directors and VPs
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills

The base salary range for this position is listed below. Your Amazon package will include sign‑on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Final compensation will be determined based on factors including experience, qualifications, and location.
