Job summary

The New Mexico Department of Information Technology is hiring a Security Guard to safeguard the John Simms Building and state data center facilities. This role provides round-the-clock protection of critical infrastructure and equipment across Albuquerque, Santa Fe, and other sites.

You will perform hourly surveillance, verify access, log visits, monitor cameras, and document shifts while coordinating with supervisors.

Qualifications

  • Experience maintaining a critical environment that requires 24/7 support.
  • Experience in computer-based monitoring (video surveillance).
  • Experience with access control (badging systems).
  • Experience monitoring environmental equipment (electrical, cooling, air quality).
  • CPR/first-aid or safety training is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct a complete physical surveillance of the John Simms Building every hour.
  • Verify critical infrastructure and perform full safety checks of the building and data center.
  • Monitor CRACs and temperatures in the computer room; ensure server racks are closed and locked.
  • Operate the Security Guard window, sign in visitors and manage visitor badges.
  • Issue and log keys for critical infrastructure to authorized personnel.
  • Monitor surveillance cameras at data centers and off-site locations; supervise entry and parking areas.
  • Escort staff to storage rooms and inventory equipment movement.
  • Prepare detailed daily shift reports and communicate issues to supervisors.

This position serves to provide security to New Mexico Department of Information Technology facilities which house the Enterprise Data Center where we provide co-location hosting services for all state of New Mexico agencies and remote telecommunication facilities in Albuquerque, Las Cruces, Las Vegas, Roswell and the B-Top sites throughout the state. These services include telecommunications, desk and mobile phones, fax lines, wireless, Internet connectivity and associated networking services for desktop support, e-mail, Cloud services, mainframe services and Public Safety Radio Communications.

THIS POSTING WILL BE USED FOR ONGOING RECRUITMENT AND MAY CLOSE AT ANY TIME. APPLICANT LISTS MAY BE SCREENED MORE THAN ONCE.

Why does the job exist?

The Security Guard shall patrol, inspect property and protect the data center and facility against fire, theft, vandalism, terrorism and operational failure on a 24 hour, 7 days per week, 365 days per year.

How does it get done?

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct a complete physical surveillance of the John Simms Building every hour (1) hour.
  • Verify critical infrastructure and perform full safety checks of the building. Conduct complete physical surveillance of the data center, domestic main water line pressure gauge, generator room, loading dock, telephone room, and battery cage in the basement every hour.
  • Monitor the chillers and the temperatures in the computer room air conditioning units (CRACS), ensuring the server racks are closed and locked in the data center.
  • Operate the Security Guard window, sign in visitors, issue appropriate visitor badges for building access, and work with the access control and video surveillance systems.
  • Issue and log keys for critical infrastructure to authorized personnel.
  • Monitor the surveillance cameras of the data center, all off-site locations, and remote telecommunication sites, including surveillance of the inside and outside of the John Simms Building, employee-assigned parking, and visitor parking.
  • Escort staff to storage rooms, complete appropriate paperwork for equipment leaving the storage room, and inventory the WASP program for equipment leaving and entering the building.
  • Monitor building control systems.
  • Monitor all cameras for buildings located in Santa Fe, Las Vegas, Albuquerque, Roswell, and Las Cruces, including the B-Top sites located in New Mexico.
  • Prevent unauthorized entry into the building/facilities.
  • Prepare a detailed daily shift report of documented rounds, temperatures, incidents, or activities that occurred during the shift.
  • Communicate with the supervisor and relieving officer about any situations or issues that occurred during the shift.

Ideal Candidate

The Ideal Candidate has:

  • Experience maintaining a critical environment that requires 24 x 7 x 365 support;
  • Experience in computer-based monitoring (video surveillance);
  • Experience of access control (badging system);
  • Experience monitoring environmental equipment i.e. electrical, cooling, air quality or meter reading.
  • Experience or training in CPR, first-aid or safety.

High School Diploma or equivalent.

Employment Requirements

Pre-employment background investigation required, and employment is conditional pending results.

Working Conditions

Work may be performed in either cold or hot temperatures (55-80 deg.) Candidate should be comfortable with shifts in unoccupied building. Some lifting (up to 50lbs.) exposure to computer CRTs, and office environments. Sitting at a PC monitoring several cameras; walking building every hour monitoring Data Control Center temperatures. Work schedule shall include assigned shift, on-call and overtime rotation, weekends, and holidays.
