Job summary

Mainspring Energy is seeking a Staff Mechanical Engineer to own critical ring and piston development activities at our Menlo Park headquarters. You will lead design, testing, and production introduction of high-precision components for low-emission power solutions.

Join a small, agile Rings team focused on challenging thermal, structural, and tribological problems with cross-functional collaboration across engineering disciplines, while contributing to a scalable, fuel-flexible technology

Qualifications

• Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent; experience thresholds stated.
• Proactive and collaborative work style for a dynamic R&D environment.
• Experience designing high-performance, precision parts from R&D through to production release.
• Fluency in SolidWorks or a comparable CAD package; familiarity with FEA tools (Ansys a plus).
• Ability to generate 2D drawings for manufacturing with GD&T.
• Systems approach to solving cross-disciplinary problems.

Responsibilities

• Lead ring and piston development projects by setting requirements and scope and building production introduction plans.
• Design complex moving parts in the piston and ring system from concept to detailed design, build, test, and evaluation.
• Root-cause failures involving thermal, structural, materials, and fluid interactions; balance analysis with hands-on work.
• Design and run test campaigns using benchtop rigs and in-generator experiments.
• Define requirements on surrounding subsystems to improve ring and piston performance.
• Collaborate with a fast-paced engineering team to identify optimal solutions.
