Job description

Job Description Summary

Training and Innovation (T&I) is a centralized group within the In vivo Science & Technology (IST) platform at the Comparative Medicine (CM) functional unit. T&I team members are responsible for planning and conducting in-person training of simple to complex in-vivo procedures for all associates working with animals at Novartis Biomedical Research (BR). The team collaborates with BR's in-vivo community to develop and standardize novel animal models and innovative in-vivo technologies for target discovery and drug development, emphasizing animal well-being and the 3Rs principles. T&I fosters best practices by collaborating with BR's in-vivo scientists for technical guidance and implementing new technologies/models.

T&I seeks a highly experienced Senior Scientist I with extensive knowledge and skills in animal work within an industrial vivarium, primarily involving rodents and some USDA species. Skills required include hands-on experience with dosing via multiple routes, surgical manipulations, monitoring, euthanasia, blood/tissue collection, and application of animal welfare principles in innovative procedures. The candidate should have experience training in-vivo scientists across a range of techniques. The role involves working in a fast-paced, collaborative, matrix environment supporting in-vivo work critical for target discovery and therapeutics development at BR.

Job Description
Your Key Responsibilities:
  1. Plan, coordinate, and execute in-person training on multiple in-vivo procedures for BR scientists, maintaining high ethical and technical standards.
  2. Develop and refine training practices, ensure compliance with institutional/regulatory policies.
  3. Provide high-level surgical expertise and develop novel animal procedures/techniques.
  4. Liaise with research teams to understand scientific rationales and training needs.
  5. Lead and review SOPs and documentation to streamline workflows.
Role Requirements:
  1. Full-time on-site work with weekend/holiday coverage as needed.
  2. Bachelor’s in Biomedical, Pharmacological Sciences, Veterinary, or Animal Science; LAT certification and Master’s preferred.
  3. 5+ years of hands-on in-vivo experience in industry, including surgical skills.
  4. Strong knowledge of animal welfare and scientific research.
  5. Experience in training in-vivo staff is highly desirable.
  6. Ability to lift 50 lbs, work standing for prolonged periods, and perform repetitive tasks.
  7. Fluent in English, with good mathematical skills.

The salary range is $93,800 - $174,200/year, with potential adjustments based on market and individual factors. Benefits include medical coverage, bonuses, stock options, and more.
