The Senior Scientist, Capsid Engineering is a key member of the Discovery Research Team and participates in the development of Spark’s gene delivery platforms. You will be critical for the development of novel AAV capsids with improved properties to enable the next generation of safer and more effective gene therapies.
The Opportunity:
Ideate novel methodologies applying the latest advances in bulk, single-cell and spatial sequencing technologies towards high-throughput capsid library screening
Develop and apply in vitro and in vivo screening approaches to identify AAV capsid variants with enhanced properties for clinical translation
Execute experiments at the bench and analyze data to guide scientific decision-making
Collaborate closely with machine learning scientists to leverage AI to accelerate capsid discovery efforts
Support collaborations with internal and external parties
Clearly communicate project progress and hurdles to team members, cross-functional collaborators and leadership
Maintain up-to-date experimental records in the form of electronic lab notebook entries and study reports
Present results in the form of publications and/or presentations at scientific meetings
Who You Are:
PhD in a biological discipline and 3-5 years of relevant experience
Strong analytical skills and problem-solving capabilities
Deep knowledge of proven and emergent methods for targeted delivery of therapeutics
Expertise in protein engineering and refinement techniques including rational design, directed evolution, saturation mutagenesis, affinity maturation, etc.
Expertise in building platforms for high-throughput screening
Expertise in molecular biology and protein analysis techniques such as molecular cloning, PCR/qPCR/dPCR, cell culture, protein production and purification, SDS-PAGE/WB, etc.
Familiarity with next-generation sequencing technologies
Familiarity with molecular biology software (e.g., Benchling, SnapGene, Geneious)
Familiarity with developability considerations for biologics and/or gene therapy (e.g., stability, manufacturability, immunogenicity)
Strong track record of scientific accomplishments in the form of publications and/or patents
Demonstrated problem-solving skills and ability to work both independently and collaboratively
Preferred Qualifications:
Familiarity with AAV biology and vectorology
Experience with studies in laboratory animal models
Familiarity with molecular visualization software (e.g., PyMOL, ChimeraX, etc.)
Experience managing internal and external collaborations
The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of Philadelphia is $103,400 to $192,000.Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law.
