Job summary

UCAR is seeking a CPAESS Scientist III to lead advanced forecasting research for CPC/NCEP under NEWS. The role involves applying AI/ML and ensemble post-processing to improve S2S predictions of extreme climate events, and engaging stakeholders across regions.

You will mentor colleagues, contribute to reports and training materials, and collaborate across disciplines to deliver rigorous, policy-relevant forecasts for Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa, and beyond.

Qualifications

• Typically requires a minimum of a Bachelor of Science degree and 8 years related experience, or a Master's degree and 4 years related experience, or a PhD in a scientific discipline; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Strong knowledge of climate systems and regional expertise; ability to apply theories to interdisciplinary problems.

Responsibilities

• Design and execute scientific investigations using established and emerging methods.
• Develop or adapt tools and methods to support data collection and analysis.
• Lead or contribute to multi-disciplinary project components and coordinate activities.
• Author scientific reports, data sets, and proposals and present findings.
