Job summary

Carnegie Mellon University’s National Robotics Engineering Center (NREC) seeks a Senior Software Engineer to develop software for robotic systems and collaborate with sponsors across the product lifecycle.

You will interface with sensors and hardware, debug prototypes, and integrate modules into end-to-end platforms, while mentoring peers and driving robust software practices in a cross-disciplinary team.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in CS/Engineering or equivalent with 5+ years in software development.
• Advanced C++ across Linux environments with scalable architectures.
• Proficient Python for data analysis, automation, and validation.
• Experience with network protocols, IPC, hardware drivers or real-time data streaming.

Responsibilities

• Architect and build core software for robotic platforms and infrastructure.
• Lead software architecture, data pipelines, and system requirements.
• Collaborate across hardware, UI/UX, product leads, and sponsors to translate needs into specs.
• Mentor junior engineers with code reviews and guidance on best practices.
• Build and maintain development tools, CI/CD pipelines, logging, and telemetry.
• Lead testing across the lifecycle from unit tests to field testing with hardware.
