Job summary

The National Robotics Engineering Center (NREC) at CMU invites applications for a Software Engineer / Senior Software Engineer in Robotics. You will design, build, and deploy real-time robotic software across perception, planning, and control layers, collaborating with hardware and systems engineers to deliver production-ready solutions.

The ideal candidate has strong C++ and Python skills, Linux experience, and a track record of working in cross-functional teams on robotics projects.

Qualifications

• B.S. in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics or equivalent.
• 1-5 years of experience in software development, systems integration, or robotics.
• Proficient in C++.
• Experience with Python for rapid prototyping.
• Linux development experience.
• Strong communication and cross-functional teamwork.
• Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Responsibilities

• Hands-on real-time software development: design, write, and maintain high-performance, robust code for robotics software stacks.
• Systematic performance maturation: analyze, profile, and benchmark to remove bottlenecks and optimize systems.
• Simulation and testbed generation: use simulation to create synthetic data and test complex scenarios.
• Multidisciplinary collaboration: work with hardware, systems engineers and domain experts to translate requirements into software.
• System integration and testing: ensure interoperability between software and hardware components.
• Iterative design and code quality: participate in reviews, documentation, and CI/CD practices.
