Toyota Research Institute (TRI) seeks a driven researcher to advance AI-powered robotics. You will operate independently within a world-class team at the cutting edge of robotics and machine learning, collaborating with MIT, Stanford, and others to push general‑purpose robot capabilities.

The role emphasizes building scalable ML pipelines, training large models on embodied systems, and publishing high-impact results.

Qualifications

• PhD in computer science, machine learning, robotics, or a closely related field.
• Experience training large models and deploying them on embodied systems, toward robotic manipulation.
• Strong Python and C++/Python codebase skills with clean, maintainable code.
• Extensive experience with ML frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow, including data pipelines and model serving.
• Strong state-of-the-art knowledge in robot learning, including diffusion policies, world models, or reinforcement learning.
• Practical experience with robots and system integration on physical hardware.
• Ability to move quickly between rapid prototyping and robust implementation.
• Proven impact via first-author publications or contributions to industry initiatives.

Responsibilities

• Work on a dynamic research team building robots and foundation models.
• Implement and extend state-of-the-art methods for robot behavior learning from multi-source data.
• Design high-performance ML pipelines and optimize learning stacks for scalability.
• Contribute to external publications and internal capabilities.
• Collaborate with partner labs at MIT, Stanford, Berkeley, CMU, Columbia, and Princeton.
