Job summary

ATCS is seeking a Senior Roadway Engineer in Herndon, VA for our transportation team. This hybrid role offers the opportunity to work on high‑profile VDOT and municipal roadway projects while shaping our design practice.

You will lead roadway design, mentor staff, and contribute to proposals and business development. Strong knowledge of VDOT standards, ORD, and Civil 3D is required, with a PE preferred.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering required.
• 6+ years of roadway design experience preferred in Virginia.
• PE license preferred; may consider candidates licensed in other states with Virginia licensure commitment.

Responsibilities

• Lead and produce roadway design plans including alignments, superelevation, sections, and grading for VDOT and municipal projects.
• Prepare and review construction plan sets and signing/pavement marking plans.
• Apply VDOT standards and local design manuals to ensure compliance on state and federal projects.
• Coordinate with subconsultants and multidisciplinary teams.
• Manage design schedules and deliverables; support QA/QC reviews.
• Interface with clients (VDOT, counties, municipalities) during design reviews and public hearings.
• Mentor junior engineers and designers; coordinate with contractors and utilities.

ATCS is seeking a Senior Roadway Engineer to join our growing Virginia transportation team. This is a hybrid position based in our Herndon headquarters offering the opportunity to work on high-profile VDOT and municipal roadway projects while helping shape the future of our roadway design practice.

This is an excellent opportunity for a design professional ready to take on greater technical leadership, mentor junior staff, and contribute directly to proposal and business development efforts.

What You'll Do

• Lead and produce roadway design plans including geometric design, horizontal/vertical alignments, superelevation, typical sections, and grading for VDOT and municipal roadway/multimodal projects
• Prepare and review construction plan sets, including plan and profile sheets, cross sections, drainage layouts, MOT/TMP plans, and signing and pavement marking plans
• Apply VDOT Road Design Manual (RDM), Road and Bridge Standards, and IIM/LAP requirements to ensure design compliance across state and federally funded projects
• Design to county-specific standards and design manuals for local projects, including Fairfax County (Public Facilities Manual / PFM), Prince William County (Design and Construction Standards Manual), and Loudoun County (Facilities Standards Manual / Design and Construction Standards)
• Prepare design waiver and exception documentation for non-standard design elements in constrained rights-of-way, coordinating across VDOT and local jurisdictional requirements
• Coordinate with subconsultants and multidisciplinary teams (structures, drainage, traffic, environmental, ROW, utilities)
• Manage design schedules, budgets, and deliverables for assigned tasks or project segments
• Support QA/QC reviews and ensure design consistency and accuracy across deliverables
• Interface directly with clients (VDOT, counties, municipalities) during design reviews, public hearings, and field inspections
• Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior and mid-level engineers/designers
• Coordinate with contractors, utility providers, and public agencies
• Participate in public meetings and help drive successful project outcomes

What We're Looking For

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering
• 6+ years of roadway design experience, preferably in Virginia
• Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred; candidates licensed in other states will be considered with a commitment to obtain Virginia licensure
• Experience with MicroStation OpenRoads Designer (ORD); Civil 3D experience is a plus
• Knowledge of AASHTO, VDOT, and local design standards and practices
• Demonstrated ability to manage design tasks independently with minimal oversight
• Strong communication, project management, and leadership skills

Our employees are the most critical part of ATCS. For this position, we offer a competitive salary range of $91,000 - $136,000per year, commensurate with experience and qualifications. The role is also eligible for an annual bonus, with a target 2% of the employee's annualized salary.
