Job summary

ThunderYard Solutions seeks a Senior RHEL / Linux Platform Engineer to support and modernize the Linux platform. The role focuses on troubleshooting complex production issues, automating recurring tasks, and improving platform reliability across HDR workloads.

Responsibilities include provisioning automation, patch management, monitoring, security hardening, and self-healing capabilities while collaborating with middleware teams in a government-facing environment in the United States.

Qualifications

• 7–10+ years administering enterprise Linux environments.
• Strong hands-on experience with Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL 8/9).
• Experience supporting large, highly available production environments, preferably federal or regulated.
• Strong Linux troubleshooting, performance tuning, and root-cause analysis skills.
• Experience supporting middleware and Java-based application environments.
• AWS and/or Azure experience preferred.
• RHEL 8/9 administration, upgrades, patching, and lifecycle management.
• Linux kernel configuration and tuning.
• HugePages and memory/performance tuning.
• systemd and service management.
• PAM, sudo, authentication, and access controls.
• Filesystems, LVM, storage, mounts, and capacity management.
• Network and OS-level troubleshooting.
• High availability, disaster recovery, and production resiliency.
• Infrastructure as Code and configuration management.
• Jenkins, GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, or similar CI/CD tooling.
• Ability to convert recurring administrative tasks into repeatable automation.

Responsibilities

• Administer and support HDR Linux/RHEL environments.

• Develop and maintain reusable Ansible playbooks.
• Automate configuration validation and compliance checks.
• Automate backups, monitoring, health checks, and operational tasks.
• Develop self-healing and proactive remediation capabilities where appropriate.
• Troubleshoot complex Linux, application, middleware, network, and performance issues.
• Support production incidents and root-cause analysis.
• Support RHEL upgrades and major infrastructure changes.
• Reduce manual administration and configuration drift.
• Improve platform reliability, repeatability, and operational resiliency.

Job description

Seeking a Senior RHEL / Linux Platform Engineer to support and modernize the Linux platform. The ideal candidate is not just a Linux administrator, but someone who can troubleshoot complex production issues, understand the interaction between RHEL and the HDR application stack, and automate recurring operational work.

The role will focus on improving platform reliability through RHEL expertise, automation, proactive monitoring, configuration management, certificate management, performance tuning, and elimination of fragile manual processes.

Required Skills/ Qualifications:

• 7–10+ years administering enterprise Linux environments
• Strong hands‑on experience with Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL 8/9)
• Experience supporting large, highly available production environments, preferably federal or regulated

• Experience supporting WebLogic and Java/JVM‑based applications
• JVM and OS‑level performance troubleshooting
• Understanding of application‑to‑OS dependencies
• Ability to identify Linux configuration changes that could impact application stability or performance

Monitoring and Operations:

• Linux OS telemetry and performance monitoring
• Log analysis and production troubleshooting
• Ability to establish proactive monitoring and alerting for Linux platform health

Additional Technical Skills

• DNS, NFS, networking, and related Linux services
• Docker and Kubernetes preferred where applicable to HDR workloads
• Backup/recovery and disaster recovery

Certificates and Security:

• Certificate and PKI administration
• Certificate inventory and expiration monitoring
• Automating certificate renewal and replacement where possible
• TLS configuration and troubleshooting
• Security hardening and vulnerability remediation
• Experience working within enterprise change and configuration‑management processes

Compensation:

$130,000-$140,000 annually, plus benefits, including medical/dental/vision coverage, PTO and a partial 401k match.
