Job description

The Senior Research Specialist will support the Meharry Center for Genome Research (MCGR) and Together for CHANGE (T4C) GREAT Health Study by performing hands‑on processing of human biological specimens (not limited to blood, saliva and buccal samples) and ensuring accurate, compliant handling of all derived materials. Under minimal supervision, the individual will conduct experiments and assays, record and analyze results, and follow established protocols for macromolecular extractions, including DNA, RNA, plasma and serum isolation from human biospecimens as specified above.

The role includes maintaining sample storage within biorepositories under subzero conditions and ensuring precise documentation of all human‑derived specimens within a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS). The individual will be responsible for compiling and communicating experimental results to the supervisor, in coordination and guidance from the lead scientist, contributing to overall data integrity and project workflow.

Additional responsibilities include preparing and shipping DNA samples using standard carriers; adhering strictly to institutional safety protocols, including the handling of chemicals, toxic materials and carcinogens; performing basic laboratory calculations (e.g., percentage solutions and serial dilutions); preparing reagents; operating and maintaining laboratory equipment; managing inventory; and ensuring a clean, organized laboratory environment.
