Job description

WHY DO WE NEED YOU?

The candidate will work within CRL Processing Technology team. The team works closely with various Saint-Gobain business units to improve production processes, solve problems, and develop new products. The candidate is expected to manage R&D projects involving polymer processing technologies such as extrusion, compounding and injection molding. The projects will be executed on laboratory and pilot-scale equipment at the R&D center, and in collaboration with our manufacturing sites. The candidate is expected to create and execute project plans, design and conduct experiments, analyze results, and present findings in written and oral formats. The ability to communicate across all levels of the organization will be an important part of this role.

Manufacturing experience in any of the above areas as well as experience with 3D CAD tools and FEA, CFD simulation software for polymers is preferable but not required. The candidate is expected to collaborate effectively with other R&D groups and engineering colleagues within other Saint-Gobain manufacturing locations, application engineers and external customers. In addition to the primary projects, the candidate will be expected to support projects led by others.

Essential Functions

  • Manages multiple projects simultaneously, on time, well documented and within budget to meet business and customer objectives.
  • Conducts research on various processing technologies and proposes solutions for quality and efficiency improvements and cost reduction
  • Utilizes scientific methods for problem solving.
  • Provides support to manufacturing sites.
  • Incumbent defines the associated tasks and milestones for research and proposes the technical approach, cost estimates, and time schedule.
  • Continuously and reliably carry projects through to completion with little assistance from supervisor.
  • Stay up to date on new technology applications and competitive uses of same in work with materials, products and processes, and in development of new knowledge.
  • An ability to design and use numerical simulation tools and methods to optimize product design and manufacturing processes to introduce new products, improve quality and reduce cost of existing products, expand the markets into which critical solutions are sold.
  • Able to communicate and use business language in an industrial environment and coordinate with plant operations.
  • Understands Gate Process methodology/ideology and utilizes and incorporates it in research projects.
IS THIS JOB FOR YOU?

Required Qualifications

BS Degree with a minimum of 12 years of experience, or MS with 7+ years of experience, or a PhD level with 3+ years of experience plus demonstrated technical and scientific accomplishments in polymer processing, polymer science, mechanical engineering or other related fields.

  • 5+ years of hands on experience with manufacturing processes/equipment in an industrial or research setting, including extrusion, compounding or injection molding.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) required.
  • Knowledge and ability to carry out Design of Experiment (DOE) required.
  • Ability to use 3D CAD design and process simulations software preferred.
  • Experience with thermoplastic injection molding and/or thermoplastic sheet and film single screw extrusion processing preferred.
  • Batch and continuous compounding of thermoplastics experience preferred.
  • Basic knowledge and ability to use Solidworks preferred.
  • Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling with ANSYS experience preferred.
