Senior Research Analyst, Global Livestock Methane

Overview

The food system accounts for around one-third of global climate impacts, and this will only increase as we work to feed a growing global population of 10 billion people. Methane emissions are a major part of these impacts but are often an under-utilized strategy for climate action. The livestock sector must accelerate methane mitigation to slow climate change and avoid its worst impacts.

EDF has been working with the dairy sector across regions (US, EU, India, China) to advance science on reducing methane emissions and engaging with the corporate sector. Initiatives include the Dairy Methane Action Alliance (DMAA) and efforts to improve livestock health in low- and middle-income countries. We are also conducting a systems review of the US beef sector to identify reduction levers.

Overall Function

The Senior Research Analyst will support the Livestock Methane science team by reviewing scientific literature, providing input on policy and corporate documents, assisting in scientific report writing, and supporting key projects. The role reports to a Lead Senior Scientist in the EDF Office of Chief Scientist.

Location & Term

Hybrid from EDF offices in Raleigh, New York, Boston, or San Francisco, or remote in the US. This is a 2-year fixed-term position with full benefits, with potential for extension.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct literature reviews on livestock manure management and methane reduction technologies.
• Assist in writing scientific reports.
• Review white papers and engage with consultants for key audiences.
• Support EDF policy and legislative teams technically.

• Support systems analysis of the beef industry.
• Publish in scientific journals and collaborate externally.

Qualifications

• Master's in a science-related field with 2+ years of experience or Bachelor's with 4+ years.
• Experience in scientific data analysis, reporting, and publication.
• Strong communication skills for advocacy and technical audiences.
• Experience with peer-reviewed publishing and conferences.
• Demonstrated cultural competency and inclusivity.
• Background in agriculture, animal science, ecology, or chemistry.
• Understanding of agricultural GHG emissions.
• Research, writing, and presentation skills.
• Knowledge of food supply chains and GHG reduction, with dairy and beef expertise preferred.
• Ability to work independently and in teams, managing diverse workloads.
• Proficiency in MS Office tools.
• Willingness to travel domestically and internationally up to 10%.

Salary range: $76,000–$81,000 USD.
