The New Mexico Department of Health is a centralized state agency that ensures safety net services to all New Mexicans through the many programs and services. The NMDOH works to ensure health equity through collaboration with partners to promote health and well-being and improve health outcomes for all people in New Mexico. The Public Health Division helps meet the needs of New Mexico by utilizing multi-disciplinary teams including Women, Infants and Children (WIC), Children's Medical Services (CMS), Health Promotion, Disease Intervention Team, and Health Services. Health Services programs include Breast and Cervical Cancer screening, Family Planning services, Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) prevention, screening and treatment, Medications for Alcohol and Opioid Use Disorder (MAUD/MOUD) Immunizations Tuberculosis (TB) treatment and emergency response.

This position supports the Santa Fe and Los Alamos Public Health Offices and the Northeast (NE) Region of New Mexico and ensures that quality health services are provided for the population. This position will be responsible for participating in any requirements for the Medicaid Administrative Claiming program as it relates to the primary duties of the job and working with clients and community members throughout Santa Fe and Los Alamos Counties.

This position supports and delivers various public health services primarily in the Santa Fe and Los Alamos Public Health Offices Health Services programs may include:

  • Breast and Cervical Cancer screening and referral
  • STI screening, treatment and referrals
  • Immunizations
  • Family Planning services
  • Medication for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD) services
  • Tuberculosis, screening and treatment
  • Case Management for tuberculosis and as need for other clients
  • Community Outreach
  • Health Promotion
  • Disease Management

This work is done through advocacy, adherence to clinical protocols, standing orders, education and policies and procedures.

How does it get done?

This position administers nursing care to clients in an autonomous environment by utilizing the laws, principles, practices, standing orders, and techniques of professional nursing. This position must make program-specific decisions per protocols, and prioritize client needs accordingly. This position must address any client care issue not covered in protocols with the Regional Health Officer or a licensed clinician. This position advises on health maintenance and disease prevention. This position also supports the functions of the licensed clinicians, clerks, and other program staff to achieve common public health goals. In addition, this position maintains compliance with program requirements.

This position serves the population of New Mexico and specifically the populations of Santa Fe and Los Alamos Counties and the Northeast Region.

Ideal Candidate

Must be comfortable screening clients for risks including sexually transmitted infections and substance use. Public health experience a plus. Spanish speaking a plus.

Minimum Qualification

Must possess a current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in New Mexico, or eligibility for such licensure in accordance with New Mexico requirements, or eligibility for a temporary license issued for employment at a specific institution in New Mexico and three (3) years of experience as it pertains to the essential duties and responsibilities of the classification.

Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License.

Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification within six (6) months of date of hire as a condition of continued employment.

Working Conditions

Primary work site is the Santa Fe Public Health Office based in Santa Fe, New Mexico but this position will be required to travel to Los Alamos regularly. Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds, stand, walk, bend, stoop, and sit for periods of time. Must be able to travel/drive for extended periods throughout the region on occasion. Must be able to speak, hear and see. Work is usually performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive telephone usage and direct client contact. Assist with outreach activities in the community on occasion.
