General Summary

Under moderate supervision, administers radiation therapy treatments to patients as prescribed by a radiation oncologist according to established standards and practices. Patients served include Adult through Adult Geriatric.

Reporting Relationships

Reports to Operations Manager of the Tate Cancer Center and Senior Radiation Therapist.

Company Description

The University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) is the flagship academic medical center at the heart of UMMS and includes the 789-bed downtown Baltimore campus and the 177-bed midtown campus one mile north. The medical staff comprises nearly 1,200 attending physicians who are faculty members at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, as well as 900 residents and fellows in all medical specialties.

UMMC is home to the Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center and The R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, the highest-volume trauma center in the United States.

UMMC was established in 1823 in partnership with the first public medical school in the nation. Today, as then, all attending physicians at UMMC are faculty members at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.

Qualifications
  1. Graduation from an AMA approved program in Radiation Therapy Technology or Radiologic Technology is required. An Associate of Science degree in Radiation Therapy Technology is preferred.
  2. Registration as a Radiation Therapy Technologist by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) is required.
  3. Licensure as a Radiation Therapy Technologist by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology in the state of Maryland is required.
  4. CPR certification is required.
  5. Three years of clinical practice in Radiation Therapy is required.
Working Conditions

Works inside a clinical environment. Exposed to frequent interruptions and multiple demands. May be physically or verbally abused by patients. May be required to work on rotating shifts. May be required to work beyond normal tour of duty and participate in on-call rotation. Must practice established radiation safety principles; to include wearing and maintaining film badges in the prescribed manner, wearing of appropriate personal protective equipment, including but not limited to lead aprons, gloves, etc. Potential for regular exposure to communicable diseases and hazardous materials, and ionizing radiation (not to exceed the legal limits of occupational exposure requiring the observance of standard (Universal) precautions and safe handling practices. This position has been classified as low or no exposure risk and does not require the completion of an annual testing, but may require "just in time" testing if the need arises.

Physical Requirements

Frequent standing, walking, stooping, and bending. Reaching for and handling equipment and supplies including lead focus blocks weighing up to 25lbs (with assistance) 80% of the time. Lifting, pushing/pulling, and transferring patients 50% of the time on/off treatment tables via wheelchairs and/or stretchers. Manual dexterity for operating equipment and computer; visual acuity for viewing display monitors and reading patient charts. Acute hearing required to assimilate oral communication from patient, physician, other health care team members, and family.
