Qualifications

Senior Radiation Therapist - Cork

Location: Radiotherapy Centre Cork

Job type: Permanent

Overview of role:

Our Senior Radiation Therapist will join our Bon Secours Radiotherapy Centre in partnership with UPMC Hillman Cancer Centre in Cork.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
  1. Maintains an atmosphere of caring, concern, and support for patients of all ages, visitors, medical staff, and co-workers.
  2. Delivers radiation treatment according to written prescription and treatment plan.
  3. Provides safety in patient care through the consistent practice of Departmental Procedures for treatment administration.
  4. Recognizes deviations from prescribed treatment delivery and reports all deviations to the Clinical Specialist/Lead Clinical Specialist.
  5. Assures the quality of treatment delivery through the complete and accurate documentation of treatment records.
  6. Assures the quality and consistency of treatment portal placement by taking and reviewing electronic portal images according to departmental procedures. Adjusts treatment fields as indicated.
  7. Explains treatment procedures to patients and/or families. Refers medical questions to appropriate personnel.
  8. Under the direction of a radiation oncologist, takes localization radiographs according to planned treatment delivery.
  9. Assists physicians or nurses in the administration of contrast agents used during treatment localization.
  10. Performs measurements for use during treatment calculation and documents data acquired during the simulation procedure.
  11. Accurately inputs treatment-related data into the verify-and-record system.
  12. Assists in the orientation and supervision of students during clinical rotations and in evaluation of their performance.
  13. Supports all treatment-related procedures and assists at other UPMC locations as needed.
  14. Uses effective communication techniques to explain treatment procedures and responds to patient concerns.
  15. Observes patients for reactions to treatments and communicates findings to staff, reinforcing patient education and side effect management.
  16. Performs and documents daily and weekly QA activities for equipment, notifying relevant staff of abnormal findings.
  17. Participates in programs to measure and improve the quality of care and attends departmental QA functions.
  18. Attends multidisciplinary team meetings and maintains accurate treatment and billing records.
  19. Maintains a safe, orderly treatment environment and provides on-call coverage for emergencies.
  20. Supports the daily operation of treatment units and CT units, ensuring smooth workflow.
Qualifications & Experience:
  • Completion of a formal radiation therapy technology program in an Irish/EU/AMA-approved institution.
  • CORU Registration.
  • Minimum of 3 years relevant postgraduate radiotherapy experience.
  • Promotion to senior level based on merit, reviewed annually once experience criteria are met.
