Job summary

MDS Staffing is seeking an accomplished Mechanical Design Engineer to lead the development of cooling system components for data center applications. You will apply expertise in heat transfer, hydronics and fluid flow to deliver ASME-compliant piping and pressure vessels, while ensuring manufacturability and cost targets.

The role requires a Bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering, 5+ years of relevant experience, and proficiency with SolidWorks.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or related engineering field required.
• 5+ years of relevant work experience preferred.
• Knowledge in hydronic/water pumping, heat transfer and fluid flow for cooling/heating systems.
• Knowledge of ASME BPV design and applications, plus AWS/ISO standards, ASME Section IX certification is a plus.
• Knowledge of electrical schematics and selection of components preferred.
• Ability to read, understand and translate customer/industry specifications into design content.
• Experience in design and failure analysis tools such as DFMEA, DFM, RCCM etc.
• Ability to design components and assemblies using 3D CAD system SolidWorks.
• Experience in NPI Stage Gate process and ERP system is a plus.
• Machine Design experience is highly preferred.
• Up to 10% domestic travel.

Responsibilities

• Apply specific technological expertise to projects (Heat Transfer, Hydraulic Network Design, Sheet Metal Design, Weldment Design).
• Perform analysis and simulations of products and customer conditions to validate design specifications and performance (Flow Network Modeling, CFD, FEA, FMEA).
• Design for ASME compliance with piping and pressure vessels and promote standard implementations in new applications for data center cooling units.
• Design and write test specifications and protocols, coordinate testing in our laboratory, review test reports for accuracy.
• Work with Designers to ensure designs meet customer requirements and are optimized for manufacturability.
• Collaborate with PMO, operations, manufacturing and quality engineers to simplify designs and improve manufacturability.
• Specify purchased part requirements and work with Supply Leaders to source parts.
• Launch standard and custom products from design to prototype to production with cross-functional teams.
• Collaborate with Sales/Marketing to partner with customers and advance product reach.
• Lead prototyping with hands-on support as needed.
• Direct outside test activities such as regulatory or third-party testing.
• Work with outside vendors to develop designs and related technologies.
• Continuously improve processes, collaboration, reduce risk, and shorten product development cycle time.

• Perform analysis and simulations of products and customer conditions validate design specifications and performance (i.e. Flow Network Modeling, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Finite Element Analysis, Failure Mode Effects Analysis, etc.).

• Design for ASME compliance with piping and pressure vessels and promote standard implementation in new applications and apply the latest in industry advancements for heat exchangers, pumps, fans and other critical components used in data center cooling units.

• Design and write test specifications and protocols, coordinate testing in our world class laboratory facility, and help review test reports for the completion and accuracy of information.

• Work with Designers to ensure designs meet customer requirements, are optimized for manufacturability, incorporate standard processes, etc.

• Collaborate with PMO, operations, manufacturing engineers, quality engineers to simplify designs and improve manufacturability to ensure projects are delivered on time and on budget.

• Specify purchased part requirements and work with Supply Leaders to source parts for use in designs.

• Work with multi-functional engineering and design teams to help launch standard and custom products by taking market specifications from design to prototype to production.

• Work closely with Sales and Marketing to partner with customers, engage in industry partnerships, and establish other relationships enabling us to advance our product and technology reach.

• Lead prototyping with some hands‑on support as needed.

• Direct outside test activities such as regulatory or other third‑party testing.

• Work with outside vendors and help develop designs and related technologies.

• Work to continuously improve processes, improve collaboration, reduce risk, and reduce product development cycle time.

YOU HAVE:

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or related engineering field required.

• Ideally 5+ years of relevant work experience.

• Knowledge in hydronic/water pumping, heat transfer and fluid flow for cooling/heating systems.

• Knowledge of ASME BPV design and applications, as well as AWS and ISO standards, ASME Section IX or equivalent certification is a plus.

• Knowledge of electrical schematics and selection of components experience preferred.
