Job summary

The New York Times Company is seeking an experienced fact checker for NYT Games to ensure accuracy and solvability of puzzles across digital and print formats. You will research, verify facts, and review notes from fellow fact checkers, solving potential issues in puzzle solutions.

This hybrid role is based in New York City, reporting to the Executive Editorial Director. You will collaborate with puzzle editors, writers, designers, engineers and marketers to maintain high standards of

Qualifications

• 5+ years of experience researching or fact-checking for a publishing company or newsroom.
• Experience conducting advanced research across diverse primary and secondary sources (government, legal, archives).
• Proficient in managing editorial data and communications using Google Docs and advanced spreadsheets.

Responsibilities

• Check factual assertions in assigned puzzle copy, including clues, questions, directions, categories, titles and themes.
• Conduct accurate research to verify facts in puzzles and related materials.
• Ensure solutions of assigned puzzles are correct and there are no alternate solutions.
• Judge puzzle feedback from other fact checkers and testers.
• Communicate feedback to stakeholders.
• Assist development of fact-checking standards for puzzles and games.
• Perform related work as assigned.
• Demonstrate commitment to journalistic independence and NYT mission.
