Job summary

The Iowa State Public Defender’s Office is seeking a highly motivated attorney to serve as Public Defender 3 in our Nevada office in Story County, Iowa. The role involves representing indigent clients and providing training to staff in local Public Defender offices.

Responsibilities include conducting investigations, drafting pleadings, and handling all stages of criminal proceedings, including plea negotiations and court arguments.

Qualifications

• Graduation from an accredited law school and licensed to practice in Iowa.
• Minimum five years of full-time work in criminal trial advocacy or prosecution.
• Current continuous experience in the state executive branch including three years as Public Defender 2.

Responsibilities

• Participates in investigation and preparation of a defense for adult offenders and immigration consequences.
• Prepares drafts of pleadings, motions, interrogations, supporting affidavits, letters, opinions, and briefs.
• Advocates complex cases at all stages of the criminal justice system, including pre-trial, plea, trial, verdict and sentencing.
• Negotiates plea bargains, dismissals, or other dispositions with prosecutors or other parties.
• Trains less-experienced Public Defenders and Public Defender Interns in trial advocacy, pleadings, procedures, legal precedence, and rules of evidence.
