Job summary

The Maryland Office of the Public Defender seeks experienced litigators to serve as Assistant Public Defenders in District XI, covering Frederick and Washington Counties. You will represent clients at all stages of criminal cases, from bail to trial, delivering zealous advocacy.

We value diversity and encourage applicants from historically underrepresented groups. Must be admitted to the Maryland Bar; felony jury trial experience preferred.

Qualifications

• Criminal jury trial experience required; felony trials preferred.
• Active membership in good standing in the Maryland Bar or Bar of another state.
• Ability to manage a high caseload and work in a fast-paced, diverse environment.

Responsibilities

• Represent clients in all stages of criminal cases, including bail hearings, motions, and trial.
• Draft reports, briefs, motions, and correspondence for clients.
• Communicate effectively with clients, teams, and service providers to achieve optimal outcomes.
• Negotiate with prosecutors, judges, and stakeholders to resolve cases favorably.
• Continuously seek professional development and handle a full caseload.
