Job summary

Kansas State Board of Indigents’ Defense Services (BIDS) in Junction City, Kansas, seeks a Lead Assistant Public Defender (PD III) for the North Central Regional Public Defender Office. The role requires handling all severity levels and complex matters with supervision.

Minimum 5 years in criminal defense and admission to the Kansas bar are expected. The position advances a client-centered, interdisciplinary defense model and opportunities to lead and mentor junior attorneys while advancing

Qualifications

• Must be a graduate from an ABA accredited law school and licensed attorney who is active and in good standing in the State of Kansas at the time of employment.
• Have a preferred minimum of 5 years of experience in criminal defense or other comparable legal practice.

Responsibilities

• Litigate all severity level cases with complex statutory, procedural, and constitutional issues.
• Provide informal leadership within the office and support office management and staff development.
• Assist with development and guidance of others and with agency-wide needs as directed by the Chief Public Defender.
• Maintain high standards of professionalism and contribute to a positive, safe, and supportive office culture.
