Job summary

Washington State Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) seeks a Public Benefits Specialist 4 at the Moses Lake Community Service Office. The PBS4 audits, coaches, trains and guides lower level specialists, conducts case and observational audits, and ensures compliance with state and federal regulations.

Qualifications

• Deep knowledge of Washington’s public assistance programs and ability to assess eligibility.
• Familiar with WAC/RCW and internal procedures to ensure legal compliance.
• Ability to design and monitor service plans addressing client barriers.
• Interpret complex documents (court orders, leases, medical notes) for program fit.
• Coordinate with external agencies to align support plans.
• Respond to audits and ensure regulatory compliance.

Responsibilities

• Conduct detailed interviews to assess eligibility for cash, food, and medical programs.
• Facilitate program orientations and explain benefit pathways clearly.
• Design, monitor, and update individualized case plans.
• Refer clients to domestic violence support, treatment, housing, and job training.
• Coordinate with external agencies to align support plans.
• Review and interpret documents to determine program fit.
• Authorize and track supportive services like transportation or childcare.
• Maintain up-to-date case notes in multiple systems.
• Respond to case audits and resolve discrepancies.
• Participate in outreach and client advocacy as needed.
