SUMMARY:
- The Prototype Fabrication Senior Technician, PD Testing Department, provides high level hands-on support resulting in the creation and/or repair of concept vehicles and prototype vehicles based on engineering documentation with minimum guidance.
- The Prototype Fabrication Senior Technician provides multiple and/or expert level of special hands-on solutions such as welding, grinding, machining, and fabrication of prototype components for test vehicles.
Responsibilities
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide machinist/fabricator skills at an expert level to create and/or repair concept vehicles and prototype vehicles that meet engineering documentation/requirements.
- Create complex prototype component such as frames with limited resources and supervision.
- Assemble/disassemble concept vehicles and prototype vehicles per drawings.
- Fabricate test fixtures with limited oversite for bench testing using experience from previous fixtures.
- Maintain the fabrication equipment in clean, ready to use condition.
- Operate test vehicles at the highest level for vehicle evaluations to identify small change poins and give feedback to development team and operate vehicle at a competent level for endurance events.
- Execute/monitor various test items by themselves and create reports.
- Test track and PD grounds maintenance utilizing skid steer and all attachments, chainsaw, trimmers and blowers and maintaining equipment to perform these duties.
- Maintain fuel station maintenance, fuel levels, and coordinate refills.
Routine decision-making:
- Determine the most efficient fabrication method to achieve the technical challenges.
- Selection of fabrication equipment for advanced fabrication capability and plan/execute the maintenance of said equipment for their expert area.
- Propose improved fabrication equipment and methods to supervisors.
- Potentially lead the efforts of 1 or more Technicians.
- Stop test especially in endurance events in case when the vehicle or equipment may show any sign of abnormality and report the situation to supervisors.
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. - High-level knowledge and familiarity with test vehicle construction/technology.
- Expert-level knowledge of machine tool operation/maintenance and applications for at least one area.
- High-level knowledge of 3D CAD and/or blueprint layout and interpretation.
- High-level knowledge of material properties and applications.
- Expert-level skill of at least one difficult fabrication method such as mill, lathe, welding (MIG, TIG, plasma, brazing, soldering, oxy-acetylene), brake press, tube bending, grinding, free-style hammer forming.
- High-level skill at using power tools.
- High-level skill at vehicle assembly and disassembly.
- Advanced skill at operating test vehicles and determining feedback.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to manipulate 3D models and read blueprints to understand fabrication requirements.
- Ability to maintain and organize fabrication area, equipment, tools, trailers and building equipment (Gates, fences, test equipment, etc) including LOTO certification to perform maintenance. If maintenance can not be performed by TVPD staff, submit and track work orders in the YMMC system.
- Ability to operate heavy equipment such as large trucks and trailers, forklifts, and maintain DOT certification to support offsite activities.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Technical or vocational school education.
- Junior college/two-year college training.
- Minimum 5 years of experience as a professional prototype fabrication technician, or production craftsman for processes required special skill.
- Personal experience with powersports vehicles.
