Job summary

Stanleygroup seeks a Senior Protection & Control Engineer to design and lead HV substation protection schemes up to 500 kV in a hybrid Austin environment.

You will model, analyze, and specify equipment, coordinate with multiple disciplines, and provide field support during construction and commissioning. Experience with ASPEN/ETAP/SKM is preferred; Texas PE within 6 months is expected.

Qualifications

  • BSEE from ABET-accredited university.
  • 10+ years of protection and control design experience.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States.
  • PE license required; ability to obtain a Texas PE within 6 months of hire.

Senior Protection & Control Engineer (Austin, TX)

Responsibilities

Design and lead high voltage substation protection schemes up to 500 kV, including computer modeling and analysis of electrical systems; prepare specifications for equipment and systems; prepare reports; apply codes and standards; perform and review design calculations; manage design budget and schedule; coordinate technical efforts across disciplines; provide field support during construction and commissioning; mentor junior staff; perform site visits for data gathering; and more.

  • Detailed design of protection and control systems for high voltage substations, creating or modifying single‑line and three‑line diagrams, AC and DC schematics, wiring diagrams, cable and conduit schedules, detailed bills of materials, control building and relay panel layouts, SCADA, RTU, and communication systems.
  • Electrical system studies and analysis using software such as ASPEN, ETAP, SKM, PSS/E, PSLF (preferred).
  • Load flow, short‑circuit, and arc‑flash analyses (preferred).
  • Co‑ordination with other disciplines.
  • Site visits for data gathering and as‑builds.
  • Write material procurement and construction specifications; evaluate contractor bids.
  • Perform protective relay coordination and settings (preferred).
  • Factory acceptance, witness testing and review shop drawings for compliance.
  • Review client equipment and design specifications for conformance with industry standards.
  • Perform typical calculations (equipment and conductor sizing, voltage drop, conduit and cable tray fill, AC loading, battery sizing).
  • Generate engineering fee estimates.
  • Provide field support during construction and commissioning.
  • Mentor and teach less experienced engineers and design staff.
  • Occasional overnight travel may be required for client meetings and site visits.
Qualifications
  • BSEE from an ABET‑accredited university.
  • 10+ years of protection and control design experience.
  • Experience working directly with clients and supporting marketing proposals (preferred).
  • Experience managing a design budget and schedule (preferred).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States for any length of time.
  • PE license required; ability to obtain a Texas PE within 6 months of hire.
