Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or closely related technical field.
• Five or more years of directly related experience in protection, automation, SCADA, RTU, power systems, or related applications.
• Strong knowledge in SIPROTEC protection and SICAM platforms; experience with IEC 61850 and related communications.
• Ability to translate customer requirements into practical system architectures and deliverables.

Responsibilities

• Develop, configure, test, document, and demonstrate applications using Siemens protection, automation, monitoring, control, and digitalization technologies.
• Perform system integration, technical validation, and proof-of-concept work; create engineering standards and reusable templates.

The Senior Protection & Automation Application Engineer supports the development, validation, and standardization of customer-focused solutions within the Siemens Protection & Automation portfolio.

As part of the Customer Solutions & Innovations (CSI) team, this role serves as a technical resource for critical initiatives, new technologies, and sophisticated customer applications. The engineer is responsible for defining business priorities, customer requirements, and portfolio capabilities into practical, validated, and scalable solutions that can be deployed by the broader organization.

This hybrid Senior Protection and Automation Application Engineer position will be based at Siemens E&A US Headquarters in Wendell, NC. Local candidates are encouraged to apply. You’ll make a difference by:

The position involves developing, configuring, testing, documenting, and demonstrating applications that use Siemens protection, automation, monitoring, control, and digitalization technologies. Responsibilities include system integration, technical validation, proof-of-concept development, laboratory testing, customer demonstrations, reference architecture development, and creation of engineering standards, application guides, and reusable solution templates.

The engineer will support a broad range of initiatives involving automation platforms, protection systems, microgrids, digital substations, energy management, power quality, cybersecurity, and cloud-connected applications. Assignments may range from first-of-a-kind technology evaluations and pilot projects to development of standardized offerings, technical baselines, and customer-facing demonstrations.

In addition to technical execution, this role works closely with Engineering, Product Management, Sales, Customer Technical Partners, Business Development, Marketing, and R&D organizations to help bridge the gap between portfolio capabilities and practical customer applications. The position requires strong technical fundamentals, hands‑on problem‑solving skills, intellectual curiosity, and the flexibility to support changing business priorities across multiple solution domains.

Basic Qualifications:

• Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or other closely related technical field.
• Five (5) or more years of directly related experience, including protection, automation, SCADA, RTU, power systems, or related applications.
• Strong technical knowledge and practical application experience in one or more of the identified technology focus areas including: SIPROTEC 5 Protection Relays, SIPROTEC V (Virtualized Protection), IEC 61850 Process Bus and Station Bus Applications, Protection and automatic transfer schemes, SICAM 8 A8000/S8000 RTU Platform, SICAM SCC visualization platform, SICAM Microgrid and Power Controller (MGC/SPC), SICAM Q Power Quality Meters
• Experience with Energy Management Applications, EPMS Architectures, Electrification X ecosystem and cloud-connected applications
• Experience developing, configuring, testing, commissioning, or supporting protection and automation systems.
• Working knowledge of power-system communications, including IEC 61850, DNP3, Modbus, IEC 60870-5-104, or similar protocols.
• Ability to interpret customer requirements and translate them into practical system architectures, application concepts, and technical deliverables.
• Demonstrated ability to independently investigate complex technical issues, evaluate options, and recommend solutions.
• Experience leading technical assignments or coordinating work across multiple functions.
• Strong written, verbal, and presentation skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with technical and nontechnical audiences.
• Ability to manage multiple assignments and adapt to changing business and customer priorities.
• Willingness to travel as required for customer meetings, testing, demonstrations, training, and project support.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience mentoring junior engineers and support the continuous improvement of tools, standards, and processes.
