Job summary

Ryan Specialty is seeking a Property Underwriter to evaluate, price, and structure commercial property risks across primary and excess layers. You will collaborate with brokers, reinsurers, and carrier partners to grow a profitable book of business within delegated authority.

Responsibilities include analyzing SOVs, COPE data, and CAT exposures, structuring layered placements, and negotiating terms and pricing.

Qualifications

• 3+ years of commercial property underwriting experience, with direct exposure to both primary and excess layers.
• Strong understanding of property insurance principles, including COPE analysis, CAT modeling, and layered/tower placement structures.
• Experience underwriting complex, large-account, or catastrophe-exposed property risks.
• Proficiency with catastrophe modeling software (RMS, AIR/Verisk Touchstone, or similar) and rating/pricing tools.
• Strong analytical, negotiation, and decision‑making skills.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to build broker relationships.
• Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, risk management, or related field (or equivalent industry experience).

Responsibilities

• Underwrite new and renewal commercial property business on both a primary and excess basis, evaluating risk quality, exposure, and pricing adequacy in accordance with underwriting guidelines and delegated authority.
• Analyze property schedules, statement of values (SOVs), loss runs, COPE data, and engineering reports to assess risk.
• Evaluate catastrophe (CAT) exposures using modeling tools and apply appropriate terms, pricing, and capacity.
• Structure excess and layered/tower placements, coordinating attachment points, limits, and terms with primary carriers and reinsurance treaty guidelines.
• Price risks using rating tools, capacity models, and pricing methodologies; negotiate terms with brokers.
• Review and negotiate policy terms, conditions, exclusions, and endorsements; issue quotes and binders within authority.
• Manage a book of business to meet growth, profitability, retention, and loss ratio targets.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with wholesale and retail brokers to drive submission flow.
• Monitor treaty/facultative reinsurance requirements and ensure placements comply with binding authority agreements.
• Partner with actuarial, catastrophe modeling, claims, and reinsurance teams to inform pricing and risk selection.
• Maintain underwriting files and compliance with audit and regulatory requirements.
• Monitor market trends, competitor activity, and capacity conditions across primary and excess property markets.
• Participate in carrier and reinsurance partner audits and stewardship meetings.
