Job summary

Macdonald & Company in Birmingham is seeking a Senior Property Accountant to lead a team of 3–4 Property Accountants and oversee monthly property financial reporting for a portfolio of multifamily assets.

You will manage month-end close, operating statements, lender reporting, audits and tax requests, while partnering with AP and treasury on processes and system improvements. This hands-on role requires strong US GAAP knowledge and Excel mastery.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business or a related discipline.
• 10+ years of relevant accounting experience.
• Massive emphasis on US GAAP and financial statements.
• Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
• Experience supervising accounting professionals.

Responsibilities

• Lead and develop a team of approximately 3–4 Property Accountants.
• Oversee monthly property accounting and financial reporting across a portfolio of owned and third-party managed multifamily assets.
• Prepare and review monthly operating statements.
• Support lender and ownership reporting, including quarterly compliance, annual audits and tax-related requests.
• Serve as a key accounting contact for property management leadership.
• Prepare and review cash flow forecasts, including distributable proceeds and operating contributions.
• Partner with AP and treasury teams to ensure appropriate accounting processes are followed.
• Oversee accounting transitions for assets entering or exiting management, including system setup, reporting and documentation supporting asset sales.
• Support accounting system maintenance, implementations and broader accounting initiatives.

Macdonald & Company is partnered with an established multifamily real estate investment and property management firm in Birmingham to appoint a Senior Property Accountant.

This is a senior-level accounting position with responsibility across property-level financial reporting, month-end accounting, asset transitions and accounting systems, alongside the supervision and development of a team of approximately 3–4 Property Accountants. The position reports directly to the VP & Controller.

The Candidate
