Job description

Senior Project Manager - Public Spaces, Waterfront/Senior RestorationManager, Programs & Public Spaces

Join our mission‑driven organization that’s growing rapidly and shaping the future of our community in South Baltimore.

Are you a community and public spaces project management professional who loves to work at the intersection of environmental restoration and justice at the local level? Are you passionate about shoreline restoration and nature-based resiliency projects in urban areas? Do you want to make an impact in South Baltimore? If this sounds like you, we have a fabulous opportunity to join our team at the South Baltimore Gateway Partnership (SBGP) in Baltimore!

The Senior Project Manager - Public Spaces, Waterfront supports SGBP’s mission‑driven Restoration Program projects in South Baltimore communities. As part of SBGP’s Transformational Projects work, the Restoration Program stewards more than $80 million in investments to restore and reconnect South Baltimore’s Middle Branch shoreline. Through the Middle Branch Resiliency Initiative (MBRI) and related investments, the Restoration Program is restoring acres of lost tidal habitat, improving water quality, strengthening resilience to flooding and erosion, and expanding public access to the waterfront. Working in partnership with South Baltimore communities, the program has already transformed significant stretches of shoreline and continues to pair major physical investments with community engagement, workforce development, programming, and stewardship.

The Senior Project Manager - Public Spaces, Waterfront independently owns a portfolio of community‑facing public space projects and partnerships. This position leads community engagement around public space investments and manages the public space design process in tandem with environmental restoration efforts, coordinating designers, community members, public agencies, and other partners from early planning through completion of design. Once projects move into construction, SBGP’s Enhanced Services team provides construction management expertise and assumes primary project management responsibility. This position is committed to strengthening the relationship between South Baltimore communities and a healthy, restored waterfront by pairing physical investments in accessible public spaces with programming, stewardship, workforce development, and meaningful opportunities for residents to engage with nature and restoration.

This is an amazing opportunity to advance your career and work with fantastic colleagues and community members to showcase the growth of South Baltimore. This is a hybrid position, primarily working at a desk, and you will need to attend meetings at the office, as well as in the community, including at construction sites, parks, or other non‑climate‑controlled environments (with the occasional evening or weekend meetings/events).

Here’s a Snapshot of the Position:

Program and Project Management:
  • Manages a portfolio of community-facing public space projects, including trails, waterfront access, recreation amenities, gathering spaces, and related improvements.
  • Serves as the day‑to‑day SBGP project manager coordinating designers, consultants, public agencies, property owners, and other partners.
  • Manages community and program partners and associated scopes, schedules, deliverables, and budgets.
  • Supports grant and funder coordination and reporting for assigned projects, with formal compliance and contract administration led by the Restoration Grants & Contracts Administrator.
  • Supports fundraising and proposal development for public space and program initiatives.
Community Engagement and Partnerships:
  • Leads community engagement associated with public space planning and implementation, ensuring community priorities continue to inform projects as they move from design through construction and activation.
  • Develops and manages partnerships that activate the restored waterfront, including opportunities for angling, birding, environmental education, recreation, stewardship, citizen/community science, and other nature‑based programming.
  • Coordinates restoration‑focused events, site activities, and public engagement in collaboration with the SBGP Communications and Outreach team and program partners.
  • Coordinates workforce development partnerships that engage residents directly in restoration and stewardship activities and creates pathways into environmental restoration, green infrastructure, landscape management, and related green careers.
  • Helps connect the physical transformation of the waterfront with the broader goal of enabling residents to gather, fish, recreate, learn, steward, and enjoy nature along the Middle Branch.
  • Coordinates with the Restoration Senior Manager, Wetlands & Research so that ecological restoration, scientific monitoring, public access, and community programming reinforce one another rather than operating as separate initiatives.
Team Coordination:
  • Works with other Restoration Program team members to implement a cohesive shoreline restoration vision that advances water quality, resiliency, habitat, and public access improvements while effectively engaging community members in the process.
  • Works with the Restoration Director to identify and secure funding sources for program and public space initiatives.
  • Works with the Restoration Senior Manager, Wetlands & Research to develop and implement a strategy for engaging the public and stakeholders around shoreline restoration.
  • Works with the Communications and Outreach team to raise awareness and develop effective communication strategies for the Restoration Program.
  • Works with the Restoration Grants & Contracts Manager to ensure all projects and programs are implemented in compliance with funding source requirements.
What You Bring:
  • 3+ years of experience in community outreach and project management, with a genuine interest in environmental sustainability.
  • Strong communication skills, including facilitating public meetings and building relationships with diverse stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with design and construction of public spaces is desirable, but technical design expertise is not required.
  • Demonstrated project management experience.
  • Software proficiency including:
    • Intermediate to advanced proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
    • Google Suite (Calendar, Docs, Maps, etc.)
    • Customer Relationship Management System (Salesforce)
    • DocuSign
    • Adobe Acrobat Pro
    • Asana
    • Video Conferencing to conduct meetings and events via Teams, Zoom, or other video conferencing technology
  • Available to work occasional evenings and weekends.

This position offers:
  • Entry annual salary range of $74,000.00 to $82,000.00, commensurate with experience.

  • A cohesive, mission‑oriented, value‑driven philosophy.
  • Career development opportunities within South Baltimore Gateway Partnership.
  • Hybrid work environment.
  • Please note that this position may require local travel up to 10% of the time.
