Senior Project Manager - Business Development

About the Role

MWH is currently seeking a highly experienced and strategic Senior Project Manager to lead large-scale, critical water/wastewater treatment plant construction projects. Projects may be either integrated project delivery such as CM-at-Risk or Design-Build, or traditional Design-Bid-Build. The ideal candidate brings a deep understanding of project delivery, operations, and business development, functioning as a true seller-doer who can manage projects while building client relationships and contributing to the growth of our company.

This role requires strong leadership, technical acumen, and a proven record of managing complex, multi-million dollar water infrastructure projects.

Essential Functions

1. Lead the planning, execution, and close-out of large-scale water/wastewater treatment plant projects (typically $50M - $300M+).
2. Oversee project teams, including engineers, superintendents, field staff, and subcontractors, providing leadership and technical support.
3. Monitor/control construction, investigating potentially serious situations and implementing corrective measures.
4. Procure subcontractors and materials through purchase agreements and subcontracts.
5. Ensure safety, quality, schedule, and budget goals are met or exceeded.
6. Proactively manage project risk, change orders, and claims, while protecting company interests.
7. Ensure compliance with contract requirements, technical specifications, and applicable codes and standards.
8. Work in a manner to ensure your personal safety and ensure that direct reporting employees follow safe work practices, using company guidelines and policies for planning and executing work in a safe manner.
9. Assume additional responsibilities as directed by senior leadership.

Client + Stakeholder Management

1. Serve as the primary point of contact for owners, engineers, and stakeholders.
2. Foster and maintain long-term client relationships through consistent communication and performance.
3. Act as a trusted advisor to clients, providing expertise on constructability, delivery methods, and project challenges.
4. Lead or participate in partnering sessions, preconstruction planning meetings, and progress updates.

Seller-Doer/Business Development

1. Identify, pursue, and help secure new work in the water/wastewater market, with a focus on existing clients and target pursuits.
2. Collaborate with marketing, estimating, and executive leadership on strategic pursuits and proposals.
3. Participate in presentations, interviews, and industry events to represent the company and build brand visibility.
4. Assist in developing annual business development goals and growth plans for assigned regions or markets.
5. Establish and maintain project budgets; monitor project costs and proactively implement corrective actions as needed.
6. Collaborate with project accounting and finance teams on forecasts, cash flow, and cost control.
7. Provide timely and accurate monthly reporting.
8. Mentor and develop project staff; foster a high-performing, team-first culture.
9. Conduct performance reviews and support professional development for assigned team members.
10. Promote a collaborative environment across field and office teams, ensuring alignment and accountability.

Basic Qualifications

1. Bachelor’s Degree in Construction Management, Civil/Environmental Engineering, or related field; or equivalent experience and training/education.
2. Minimum of 10 years of construction, design, finance and management experience/knowledge required on heavy civil or industrial construction projects.
3. 5+ years of experience on water or wastewater plant projects.
4. Proven ability to lead construction projects; design-build and CMAR experience preferred.
5. Strong understanding of w/ww systems, including process piping, concrete structures, implementation, mechanical equipment, installation, and startup/commissioning.
6. Track record of successful client relationship management and business development.
7. Demonstrated leadership of multidisciplinary teams, including self-perform and subcontracted work.
8. Exceptional communication, negotiation, and presentation skills.
9. Proficiency in project management software (e.g. CMiC, Procore, MS Project, or equivalent).
