Job summary

HDR is seeking an experienced Senior Project Manager to lead large, complex engineering programs in California. You will direct multidisciplinary teams, manage scope, schedule, and budgets, and ensure client satisfaction through effective communication and governance.

You will build and mentor teams across locations (Walnut Creek and Folsom), drive risk management, QA/QC, and coordinate with accounting and leadership on periodic reviews.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • 10 years of related experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years of project management experience.
  • Strong organizational, PM, and communication skills.
  • Ability to interact with design teams.

Responsibilities

  • Direct and coordinate multidisciplinary teams throughout project lifecycle.
  • Manage large complex planning and engineering projects with high technical/political complexity.
  • Produce and coordinate several projects concurrently.
  • Maintain client relations and participate in meetings including contractual, planning and engineering.
  • Ensure quality and all deliverables to the client.
  • Serve as primary point of contact for client relations.
  • Direct all work associated with the projects.
  • Oversee overall financial health of the projects.
  • Track finances and adjust work to meet budget and schedule.
  • Coordinate staffing across project lifecycle to ensure on‑time deliverables.
  • Collaborate with Accounting, Operations and Leadership for reviews.
  • Implement QA/QC procedures.
  • Perform risk management and mitigation.
  • Supervise large project teams and mentor.
  • Perform other duties as needed.

Job description

Responsibilities
  • Direct and coordinate work of multidisciplinary teams throughout the project’s lifecycle (from development and initiation to close‑out)
  • Responsible for all aspects of large complex planning and engineering projects with high degree of technical and political complexity, involving a large project team
  • Produce and coordinate several projects concurrently
  • Establish and maintain client relations and be involved with contractual, planning, and engineering meetings
  • Responsible for quality and all deliverables to the client
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for client relations
  • Direct all work associated with the projects
  • Responsible for the overall financial health of the projects
  • Track financial aspects of projects, and coordinate and adjust work effort with the team to ensure work is completed within parameters of an agreed‑to budget and schedule
  • Coordinate staffing and workload through the entire project life cycle, and ensure completion of deliverables on schedule
  • Work with Accounting, Operational and Business leadership for periodic project reviews
  • Implement quality assurance and quality control procedures
  • Perform risk management and mitigation procedures
  • Supervise large project teams and act as mentor
  • Perform other duties as needed
Preferred Qualifications
  • PMP Certification
  • California Professional Engineer (PE) license or Professional Geologist (PG) license
  • Strong leadership skills with experience building a cohesive team culture and managing team members located in various locations
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; comfortable facilitating teams and presenting to clients in a public setting
  • Familiar with the various tools used to manage programs – Project Management Information System (PMIS), scheduling, cost control, document management, risk management, dashboard analytics, etc.
  • Experience with water resources planning and management, XM Planning, water supply reliability studies, climate resiliency plans, or other related studies
  • May require the ability to travel
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field
  • 10 years of related experience
  • Minimum of 5 years of project management experience
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office, estimating and scheduling software, project management software
  • Ability to interact with various design teams and strong organizational, project management and communication skills (both written and verbal)
  • Commitment to actively participate in an employee‑owned culture
