The Senior Project Engineer will oversee Distribution Generation (DG) scale solar PV and battery storage projects through late-stage development, design, construction, and commissioning. Responsibilities include electrical, civil, and structural design, RFI, SOW, RFP processes, energy modeling, quality control, punch list development, and performance testing review and approval.

This role is based in AES’s Louisville-Colorado office, with up to 25% travel to project sites.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop project Scope of Work (SOW) and design standards.
• Evaluate proposals for engineering services.
• Manage engineering consultants for project drawings and support material, ensuring adherence to AES standards.
• Review and comment on design work from consultants and contractors.
• Conduct technical due diligence and design reviews.
• Coordinate design reviews and provide feedback.
• Respond to contractor RFIs during design and construction.
• Visit project sites during construction for QA/QC inspections and punch list resolution.
• Perform Job Safety Assessments (JSA) and Safety Walks.
• Review commissioning reports and analyze system performance.
• Support project turnover to O&M/Asset Management teams.
• Assist in technical due diligence for project financing.
• Serve as the technical point of contact with EPC and engineering firms.
• Coordinate utility engineering needs during construction and commissioning.
• Optimize design for value, reliability, performance, and cost reduction.
• Troubleshoot existing systems with Asset Management team.
• Support EPC contract management.
• Assist with schedule and budget development.
• Model energy production and performance for PV and storage systems.
• Review equipment specifications and assist in selection.
• Enhance processes for safe, high-quality project execution.
• Mentor team members on technological trends, standards, and safety.

Primary Qualifications

• Undergraduate degree or equivalent in Engineering or technical field, preferably Electrical or Civil.
• 7+ years in solar project design, development, construction, and analysis.
• 3+ years experience with energy storage systems design and modeling.
• Understanding of major solar and BESS equipment, including PV modules, inverters, racking, and trackers.
• Proficiency in PV system design, NEC codes, and electrical analysis.
• Experience with medium and high voltage interconnection design.
• Knowledge of SCADA and DAS system design.
• Civil design and stormwater management knowledge.
• Familiarity with NEC, IBC, NFPA 855, and NESC codes.
• Proficiency with AutoCAD, PVsyst, and MS Office.
• Utility interconnection expertise.
• Strong team collaboration skills and leadership qualities.

Plus

• Engineering degree or equivalent.
• EIT or PE certification.
• Experience with ETAP, SKM, and other modeling tools.
• Substation/HV design experience.
• NABCEP PV Installation Professional certification.
• Spanish language skills.
• OSHA 10- or 30-hour training.
• Experience with Procore.
