Job description

Savion, a Shell Group portfolio company, is one of the largest, most technologically advanced utility-scale solar and energy storage project development companies in the United States. With a growing portfolio of more than 40.8 GW, Savion’s diverse team provides comprehensive services at each phase of renewable energy project development, from conception through construction. As part of this full-service model, Savion manages all aspects of development for customers, partners, and project host communities. Savion is committed to helping decarbonize the energy grid by replacing electric power generation with renewable sources and delivering cost-competitive electricity to the marketplace.

Our workplace culture attracts competitive, smart, and fun people. We are committed to the health, fitness, and work-life balance of our employees. Our employees are highly motivated, technically proficient, team-oriented, and committed to renewable energy. We recognize that our employees are our most valuable asset and offer highly competitive pay as well as exceptional above-market employee benefits. Balancing work and play are met with generous PTO allowances and 14.5 paid holidays per year.

About the Role

At Savion, we are at the forefront of renewable energy, developing solar, storage, gas-fired generation, and datacenter power systems. As we expand our engineering team, we are seeking a Senior Project Electrical Engineer to serve as a technical leader for electrical design, power system architecture, and distribution strategy across renewable energy and powered land for datacenter projects.

This role is intended for a senior electrical engineering professional who can lead complex project workstreams, coordinate consultants and vendors, mentor junior engineers, and translate project, utility, owner, and commercial requirements into constructible design packages through the end of pre-construction.

As a Senior Project Electrical Engineer, you will lead electrical engineering and design coordination for utility-scale solar, BESS, and datacenter projects. This role focuses on HV system architecture, MV collection systems, DC solar design, BESS and powered land for datacenter electrical distribution, owner-side technical coordination, and design readiness for procurement and pre-construction handoff.

You will guide internal teams and external consultants, review technical deliverables, support basis-of-design development, resolve design interfaces, and provide practical engineering judgment during greenfield project development. Some in-house design and minimal CAD work will be required; however, most detailed design production will be outsourced to external engineering resources.

Responsibilities
  • Lead electrical design efforts and power system architecture for renewable energy and datacenter projects, including coordination of internal stakeholders, external consultants, equipment suppliers, utilities, owners, and EPC/delivery interfaces.
  • Own discipline scope definition, deliverable planning, engineering assumptions, action/decision tracking, design review cycles, and technical risk communication through development and pre-construction.
  • Lead MV collection system design strategy, including feeder architecture, cable/conduit sizing assumptions, voltage drop, ampacity, grounding interfaces, constructability considerations, and coordination with civil/site layouts.
  • Lead DC design for solar projects, including array-to-inverter design concepts, DC cable routing assumptions, combiner/stringing strategy where applicable, inverter/PPC selection inputs, and design tradeoff documentation.
  • Support BESS electrical architecture, including collection/distribution interfaces, inverter/PCS block design inputs, auxiliary power concepts, grounding/protection interfaces, SCADA/PPC coordination, and vendor design reviews.
  • Support powered land for datacenter electrical concepts, including high-level site power distribution, utility interconnection interface, medium-voltage distribution strategy, backup/firming generation interfaces where applicable, and owner/utility requirements translation.
  • Maintain high-level proficiency with substation and high-voltage designs sufficient to define requirements, review conceptual deliverables, identify risks, and coordinate with transmission/grid integration resources; detailed HV design ownership is not required.
  • Manage consultant engineering deliverables, including scopes of work, assumptions, drawing and calculation reviews, RFI resolution, QA/QC comments, schedule/quality gates, and readiness for procurement or construction handoff.
  • Produce or directly support preliminary single line diagrams, design sketches, electrical layouts, basis-of-design narratives, technical notes, equipment lists, calculation assumptions, and owner/utility clarifications.
  • Perform limited in-house design and minimal CAD work as needed to support early layouts, design reviews, estimating, RFPs, and consultant direction.
  • Support greenfield projects from early development through the end of pre-construction, then provide a clear technical handoff to the construction/delivery team.
  • Perform QA/QC technical review of in-house and third-party electrical engineering designs, calculations, studies, specifications, and construction-ready deliverables.
  • Support technical bid evaluations, vendor alignment, estimating inputs, approved vendor/specification development, and value engineering for electrical scope.
  • Identify key project and portfolio risks related to grid compliance, grounding, thermal limits, protection settings, constructability, equipment availability, design interface gaps, and owner/utility requirements; communicate recommended mitigations to project leadership.
  • Mentor associate engineers and engineers on calculation traceability, design review discipline, consultant management, tool proficiency, and project engineering best practices.
Required Qualifications
  • Utility-scale solar, BESS, datacenter, industrial power, or renewable energy electrical project design experience.
  • MV collection system design experience, including cable/conduit sizing, voltage drop, grounding, protection/coordination interfaces, and constructability awareness.
  • DC solar design experience, including inverter block layouts, stringing/combiner concepts where applicable, DC cable strategy, and solar electrical BOM inputs.
  • Familiarity with BESS electrical design concepts, PCS/inverter interfaces, auxiliary power, fire/life-safety design interfaces, SCADA/PPC coordination, and major equipment vendor reviews.
  • High-level understanding of HV substation and gen-tie design sufficient to coordinate conceptual layouts, review consultant deliverables, and identify major risks; detailed HV substation or transmission design capability is preferred but not required.
  • Ability to interpret utility, owner, interconnection, EPC, and vendor requirements and convert them into actionable design constraints, exceptions, and clarifications.
  • Ability to review electrical studies such as load flow, short circuit, relay coordination, arc flash, grounding, cable ampacity/thermal, harmonics, and reactive power studies; direct authorship preferred where applicable.
  • Working knowledge of applicable codes and standards, including NEC/NFPA 70, NESC, IEEE, ANSI, NEMA, NFPA, UL, equipment standards, owner requirements, utility requirements, and awareness of NERC-related project impacts.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD for limited in-house design, drawing review, redlines, and consultant coordination; advanced production CAD work is not expected.
  • Experience with ETAP, CYMCAP, PVCase, PLS-CADD, project-specific inverter/PPC selection tools, or similar engineering tools is preferred.
Preferred Qualifications
  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering or related field required.
  • Preferred 10+ years of professional experience in utility-scale PV/BESS, datacenter, gas fired generation, industrial power systems, substation, transmission/gen-tie, or related electrical project engineering.
  • Demonstrated experience leading multi-project or major-project electrical design workstreams, consultant deliverables, technical reviews, RFIs, and design packages to procurement, IFB, or pre-construction readiness.
  • PE strongly preferred, or active pursuit of PE; EIT/FE preferred if PE is not held.
  • Experience supporting greenfield development, RFPs, estimating, owner/utility discussions, vendor reviews, EPC handoffs, and construction/commissioning support is preferred.
  • Base, bonus and compensation commensurate with experience
  • Vacation & Holidays: Generous paid time off plus 14.5 paid holidays
  • Benefits: Health & dental insurance, long-term disability and life insurance, 401(k) match
  • Awesome culture and opportunities for interaction across multiple departments with fun and exciting events and challenges
  • Savion offers a culture that embraces a flex-time schedule so as to maximize both productivity and work‑life balance
