Job summary

Vocon in Chicago seeks a Senior Project Designer to lead the design execution of complex projects across interiors and architecture. You will collaborate with technical leads and clients to shape concepts, documents, and presentations from inception to construction.

This role demands strong leadership, a deep understanding of the full design process, and the ability to mentor studios while promoting client relationships and design excellence within a collaborative team at Vocon.

Qualifications

• Degree in architecture or interior design from an accredited university.
• NCIDQ Certification required for interior design professionals.
• LEED and/or Well credentials a plus.
• Design professional with (typically) twelve plus years of experience in commercial interior design and/or architecture.

Responsibilities

• Lead design execution of complex medium and large projects.
• Partner with technical and management leaders to execute the project, coordinate resources and inputs from inception to completion.
• Lead as a senior member of the project team across all phases of design presentation and documentation.
• Lead design execution across programming, conceptual design, schematic design and design development.
• Produce design and presentation documents.
• Participate in client design presentations.
• Collaborate with technical leads and engineers to inform design outcomes.
• Deliver project scope in alignment with fee, schedule and construction cost with PM and technical lead.
• Provide guidance in construction documentation to ensure design intent.
• Develop planning concepts for interiors (spaces, layout) and architecture (site planning).
• Coordinate specifications and material selections for construction.
• Coordinate furniture systems selections for interiors.
• Formulate aesthetically compelling designs aligned with project goals.
• Assist in managing client expectations and consultant coordination.
• Participate in project budget management and cost control methods.
• Mentor and elevate current and future leaders within studios.
• Promote Vocon and strengthen client relationships.

SENIOR PROJECT DESIGNER

Overview

Design professional functioning as Design Lead for projects. Responsible for owning the design execution of assigned projects as a core member of the project leadership team. Fundamental competency in Senior Project Designer job category.

Responsibilities

• Responsible for leading and owning the design execution of complex medium and large sized projects.
• Responsible for actively and regularly partnering with technical and management leaders to execute the project, coordinate resources and integrate inputs from project inception to completion.
• Participate as a leading member of the project team in all aspects of project scope - informing the workplan, driving design, complying with jurisdictional requirements, leading and producing content for all phases of design presentation and documentation.
• Lead design execution across multiple project phases including programming, conceptual design, schematic design and design development.
• Produce design and presentation documents.
• Participate in client design presentations.
• Collaborate with technical lead and engineers early and often to inform design outcomes.
• Accountable for delivering project scope in alignment with fee, schedule and construction cost in collaboration with project manager and project technical lead.
• Provide guidance in construction documentation phase to ensure design intent.
• Develop planning concepts as applicable to discipline:
• Interiors: conceptual planning, spacing planning, building restacking
• Architecture: conceptual planning, site planning
• Provide project team coordination for specifications and material selections required for construction.
• Provide project team coordination for material location documentation (elevations, finish plans, etc.).
• For interior projects, participate in selection of furniture systems and specifications and coordinate design intent with project team members.
• Formulate designs that are aesthetically compelling and conducive to intended purposes.
• Assist in managing client expectations and consultant coordination.
• Participate in project budget management and cost control methods.
• Act as a resource to studios and project teams with a voice crossing the spectrum of design support, mentorship and education.
• Be a resource for resolving complex design issues and provide oversight and guidance to studios and project teams.
• Identify, mentor and elevate current and future leaders.
• Continuously work to promote Vocon, while fostering existing and new relationships with clients.
