Qualifications

• Experience with job cost accounting, general ledger, reconciliations, and project-level accounting.
• Strong Excel skills (SUMIF/SUMIFS, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, PivotTables).

Responsibilities

• Oversee job cost accounting and accounts payable for real estate development and construction projects.
• Maintain ledgers for development entities, including journal entries, reconciliations, and capitalization of project costs.
• Reconcile intercompany accounts across enterprise and development entities.
• Prepare and review project-level trial balance reconciliations.
• Monitor and analyze development project cash balances.
• Support construction draws, funding requests, and project disbursements.
• Perform treasury and cash management activities for development projects.
• Prepare and maintain loan draw schedules and supporting documentation.
• Support year-end close and annual audits for development entities.
• Coordinate with auditors regarding cost certifications, eliminating entries, and affordable housing documentation.
• Review project accounting activity and guide Project Accountants to ensure accuracy and compliance.
• Collaborate with development, construction, property management, and accounting teams to resolve issues.

We are seeking a Senior Project Accountant to join a growing nonprofit organization focused on affordable housing and community development. The organization develops, acquires, renovates, owns, and operates affordable housing communities throughout California and Texas, serving thousands of residents.

This is an opportunity to join a collaborative team where Accounting plays an important role in supporting real estate development, construction projects, and long-term property operations.

About the Role

The Senior Project Accountant will provide accounting support for real estate development projects, with a strong focus on job cost and construction accounting, accounts payable, construction draws, cash management, and project cost tracking.

This position will work closely with internal development and accounting teams as well as external stakeholders, including auditors, lenders, property management teams, and general contractors.

The Senior Project Accountant will also provide guidance to Project Accountants and help strengthen accounting processes, documentation, and internal controls.

Key Responsibilities

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field.
• 5+ years of accounting experience, including significant construction accounting experience.
• Strong understanding of the construction lifecycle, project costs, and development accounting.
• Experience with job cost accounting, general ledger accounting, reconciliations, and project-level accounting.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to research issues, identify discrepancies, and determine appropriate solutions.
• Strong Excel skills, including SUMIF/SUMIFS, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, and PivotTables.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Strong attention to detail, organization, and follow-through.
• Ability to work independently, ask questions, research solutions, and take ownership of assigned projects.
