Job summary

Willdan Group, Inc. is seeking a Professional Land Surveyor for its Southern California offices. The role leads survey staff, oversees field and office survey operations, and acts as City/County Surveyor. A CA PLS license and extensive subdivision mapping experience are essential.

The position supports boundary and topographic surveys, ALTA/NSPS surveys, and coordination with engineers and planners across Willdan’s teams. Strong leadership and project oversight are required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university, or equivalent work experience.
• Active California Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) license.
• At least 10 years of progressive professional land surveying experience.
• Background in subdivision mapping and subdivision processes, including preparation and review of subdivision maps, parcel maps, legal descriptions, lot line adjustments and lot mergers, right-of-way engineering, easements, records of survey, corner records, ALTA/NSPS surveys, boundary and topographic surveys, and design surveys.
• Prior experience serving as a City or County Surveyor is strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

• Act as City/County Surveyor for cities and counties throughout California.
• Prepare easement and right-of-way legal descriptions and plats; coordinate field and office survey work with subconsultants.
• Provide technical guidance and support to surveying staff; monitor budgets and timelines to ensure efficiency and profitability.
• Oversee office survey staff and staff development; ensure quality and accuracy of survey data and deliverables.

Willdan is currently seeking a Professional Land Surveyor for their Southern California offices.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The person in this position plans, directs, and coordinates the work of survey staff, engaged in surveying earth's surface and preparing maps, drawings, legal descriptions, and exhibits of land by performing the following duties personally or through subordinate supervisors and staff. A significant portion of the individual's time may be dedicated to map checking activities for municipalities and serving in a City or County Surveyor capacity. A supervisory classification would be warranted for staff with experience and capability to oversee office and field operations as required to oversee and coordinate staff toward the production of survey deliverables, such as mapping and mapping review tasks, field survey operations, and coordination with other consultants, subconsultants, stakeholders, and other surveyors of record.

• Subdivision and Parcel Map Checking.
• Lot Line Adjustment & Lot Merger document checking.
• Easement and Right-of-Way Acquisition and Vacation document checking
• Act as City/County Surveyor for cities and counties throughout California.
• Preparation of easement and right-of-way legal descriptions and plats.
• Ability to respond to questions and recommend appropriate administration of the Subdivision Map Act and Professional Land Surveyor's Act.
• Coordinate subconsultant field and office survey work.
• Work with various divisions (engineers and architects) within Willdan to provide necessary services, such as boundary and topographic surveys, aerial photogrammetry, airborne lidar, terrestrial scanning, preparation of legal descriptions and plat maps, coordination of appraisal and acquisition services.
• Legal work - Provide law firms, title companies, and cities technical expertise in the review of defective title, reformation of deeds, expert witness.
• Providing technical guidance and support to surveying staff.
• Monitoring project budgets and timelines to ensure efficiency and profitability.
• Ensuring the quality and accuracy of survey data and deliverables.
• Oversees office survey staff. Monitors employee development.

The City/County Surveyor provides survey map and document checking services, along with consultation support for Public Works and Planning Departments. The selected individual will perform professional review, oversight, and advisory services in compliance with the California Subdivision Map Act, Professional Land Surveyor's Act, applicable county ordinances, and industry best practices.

Job Requirements

• Bachelor's degree (B.A.) from four-year college or university, or equivalent work experience.

• Background in subdivision mapping (major and minor) and subdivision processes, including demonstrated experience with preparation and review of subdivision maps, parcel maps, legal descriptions, lot line adjustments and lot mergers, right-of-way engineering, easements, records of survey, corner records, ALTA/NSPS surveys, boundary and topographic surveys, and design surveys.
• Prior experience serving as a City or County Surveyor is strongly preferred.
